POSITION SUMMARY:

The Communications Specialist I is responsible for high-quality planning, organizing, and execution of various communication services that support Fresno American Indian Health Project (FAIHP). Overseeing the planning and implementation of outreach strategies to build public awareness among members of the Native American community to health and social inequities within the Fresno area is key to this role. The Communications Specialist I must be professional, personable, and reliable to work in the community connecting with stakeholders, strengthening our reputation, and accurately sharing information and resources. This staff person will play a key role in maximizing collaboration opportunities with community partners at the local, state, and Tribal levels. Additional tasks and activities will include leading events and outreach activities; supporting media campaigns and community messaging; and documenting and tracking outreach encounters to name a few. The Specialist will ensure that all efforts align with FAIHP’s goals – promoting health, wellness and culture while facilitating resource sharing, and contributing to a culture of cooperation and collaboration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support implementation of a corporate Communications Plan that increases awareness of available health and wellness services; improves patient engagement and follow‑through; strengthens relationships with community and partner organizations; promotes culturally grounded health and wellness education; and enhances visibility of success stories and program impact.
  • Update a master calendar/tracking system for all internal and external FAIHP events, activities and media related work.
  • Support events, activities and outreach efforts paying attention to detail for event logistics; material and resource preparations; ensuring adequate staffing and support; representing FAIHP with a high level of sophistication and reliability.
  • Work closely with all department leads and staff when developing outreach strategies, materials, and resources that establish a strong cultural based presence.
  • Responsible for nurturing new and old relationships with collaborative partners, community members, agencies, and others.
  • Cross train with the Communications Specialist II to support media efforts for events may include but are not limited to strategic planning, content creation, communication management, cross-department coordination, data tracking and monitoring, and brand safety and compliance.
  • Cross train with the Communications Specialist II to support website management efforts, including but not limited to development plan, third party website support, and ongoing maintenance ensuring current and accurate website content and meeting security and compliance requirements, all of which supports long term growth and a strong reputable community presence.
  • Cross train with the Communications Specialist II to support management of the Staff Portal (internal communication channel) ensuring timely and accurate organizational updates; HR tools and documents; cultural resources and activities; health promotion and community awareness campaigns; numerous programs and services information; and training and compliance materials.
  • Lead FAIP community events such as health fairs, public events, meetings, open house informational sessions, etc. using a structured project management system that includes but is not limited to preparing accurate records and reports on the goals of the outreach plan and the outcome of each effort.
  • Ensures excellent communication with the community by responding quickly and completely to public and community inquiries. Expected to brief their supervisor and/or leadership staff on public interest and concern matters.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners, sponsors, and external resources to support events and expand FAIHP’s community impact.
  • Foster relationships with external partners, ensuring effective collaboration and communication for shared goals that help to leverage resources for community outreach, participant engagement, and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Oversee and trains interns/volunteers to support various communication efforts and organization goals.
  • Requires schedule flexibility, such as evening, early morning, and weekend requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma and Some College required.
  • Associate’s degree in communications, marketing, social work or a closely related field. Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, business, or social work-related fields preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 2 years prior experience in conducting outreach and community engagement activities.
  • Experience with community advocacy efforts
  • Experience working with Native American communities preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Active CA driver’s license

SKILLS:

  • Project management and community engagement skills.
  • Ability to work independently, and manage their time, and resources well.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, using MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Passionate about Fresno American Indian Health Program and outreach project goals.
  • Experience in creating outreach and newsletter material.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Problem-solving skills and resourceful thinking.
  • Strong empathy and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented and excellent organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and analytically driven.
  • Patience and knowledge to train culturally diverse staff, interns, and volunteers.
