Overview of the role
Fresh Start is seeking a highly skilled Accounting Specialist to join our team of ardent champions! This role involves working closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to manage the accounting activities of the organization. This includes assisting in the preparation of financial reports, monitoring financial performance, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations and standards. The Accounting Specialist is responsible for coordinating all accounting functions for the organization and must be proficient in QuickBooks Online. The primary functions include:
- Record and reconcile daily financial transactions (AP, AR, bank/credit accounts).
- Maintain the general ledger in compliance with GAAP and nonprofit standards (FASB 958).
- Process invoices, expense reimbursements, and vendor payments.
- Assist with all month-end reconciliations and procedures.
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements for management and board reporting.
- Support the preparation of annual budgets and grant-specific budgets.
- Track restricted/unrestricted funds and donor contributions.
- Assist with annual audit and 990 preparations.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, policies, and external regulations.
- Provide ad hoc financial analysis to support decision-making.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Must be proficient in QuickBooks Online
- 2 years of nonprofit or fund accounting experience preferred.
- Familiarity with QuickBooks (or other nonprofit accounting software).
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit compliance.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and communication skills.
