Job Overview

We are delighted to be looking to appoint a 0.6WTE Band 6 Specialist Dietitian to work at Newcastle Hospitals within renal services. Working within the regional renal unit and transplant centre for the north east of England.

This is a fantastic opportunity to broaden your dietetic experience within a specialist area working within the already established multidisciplinary team. This includes both inpatient and outpatient work with the chance to be involved with service development and to gain experience in general nephrology, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplant surgery and critical care.

The renal dietetics team is part of Newcastle Nutrition, an enthusiastic and committed dietetic organisation, and benefits from excellent support from specialist colleagues within many disciplines. You should have already gained post-registration dietetic experience across a range of areas in an acute hospital setting. Experience of working with renal patients is desirable but not essential as full training will be provided

Main duties of the job

The renal dietitians enjoy a high profile within the renal directorate, with excellent MDT relationships and support. They work to provide a high quality service to renal patients and are actively involved in research and development at local and national level. To deliver this service, some occasional working outside of normal hours may be required. The department is part of Newcastle Nutrition, an enthusiastic and committed dietetic organisation, and benefits from excellent support.

The post holder will be required to

  • Deliver a high quality dietetic service to patients within the renal service
  • Take part in student training and supervision
  • Contribute to research and audit
  • Work effectively as part of the MDT

You Should Be Enthusiastic And Self-motivated And Will

  • Have a broad knowledge of general dietetics
  • Be able to demonstrate ongoing CPD and have evidence of developing practice.
  • Be able to support colleagues and take responsibility for the clinical supervision of junior staff and students.
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Be able to maintain good relationships with colleagues and the wider the MDT

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • Delivers a comprehensive and effective clinical nutrition and dietetic service in acute hospital services in the specialist area/s or in the community.
  • Provides specialist dietetic assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and management in the clinical setting and in one or more sub-speciality areas. This may include supplementary prescribing.
  • Provides specialist dietetic assessment, treatment, monitoring and management in one or more speciality areas of dietetics.
  • Acts as a source of expertise in nutrition support and dietetics to patients, consultants and other health care professionals.
  • Contributes to designing, planning and implementing research and audit and contributes to publishing results, working in interdisciplinary teams or with other health professionals.

Person specification

Band 6

Essential criteria

  • Health and Care Professions Council Registered Dietitian.
  • Degree in Dietetics or Science/Nutrition Degree plus Post-graduate Diploma in Dietetics
  • Evidence of specialist training through short courses or a validated qualification in one of more specialist areas of dietetics e.g. nutrition support, paediatrics, home enteral feeding, supplementary Prescriber (Non-medical prescribing course V300)
  • Post registration employment in general clinical dietetics.
  • Evidence of participation in and contribution to audits
  • Evidence in CPD
  • Clinical Supervisory Skills Course and/or Teaching Certificate
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications
  • Good interpersonal skills

Desirable criteria

  • Basic training in counselling and/or motivational interviewing or cognitive behavioural therapy.
  • Basic Food Hygiene.
  • Experience in student training
  • Experience of working with wider multidisciplinary team towards a shared purpose/goal
  • Proficient use of Electronic Patient Records
