Job Overview
The Radiotherapy Engineering Group (REG) at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Radiotherapy Engineer to join our team in a senior role.
NCCC operates across two sites, the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle delivering highly specialised cancer treatment services. You will be based on the Newcastle site but may be expected to travel to provide support on the Carlisle site if needed.
In total NCCC has 11 linear accelerators including nine Varian Truebeams and one Varian Edge system. Other equipment includes C Rad Catalyst SGRT, Brainlab Exactrac, Hypersight, Darpac SXT, Siemens goOpen Pro CT scanners, Siemens Confidence RT Pro CT scanner and Siemens Sola MR scanners.
The successful applicant will join a dedicated radiotherapy engineering team working in close collaboration with the radiotherapy physics equipment team to provide a high‑quality, patient‑centred service. This senior‑level position offers wide‑ranging responsibilities and strong opportunities for professional growth.

- Performing accurate fault diagnosis and delivering effective repairs
- Monitoring equipment reliability and identifying performance trends
- Working within an established Quality Management System
- Undertaking equipment quality control checks to ensure safe operation
- Supporting the delivery and continual improvement of the Radiotherapy Engineering Service

- Hold a master's‑level qualification or have equivalent relevant experience in an appropriate discipline
- Have completed a recognised engineering or technical apprenticeship or training programme
- Possess demonstrable experience in radiotherapy engineering, particularly with Varian equipment

- Recognised Degree in relevant subject or equivalent experience.
- Appropriate post-graduate degree at master’s level, or equivalent level of specialist knowledge.
- Management training, e.g., ILM Level 3 Recent Radiation Protection Supervisor certificate
- On the RCT or AHCS PTP register.

- Specialist training and practical experience on Linear accelerators, CT scanners, and other radiotherapy equipment
- Extensive practical experience in radiation equipment servicing, workshop practices and techniques, covering preventative maintenance, servicing, calibration and quality control, inspection, repair, and safety.
- Specialist knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering, electro-mechanical and computer systems
- Good knowledge of IT software packages (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Excel) and experience of applying them.
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines, local rules, and safety practices, e.g., ISO 9001, BSI standards, COSHH.
- Broad knowledge of Radiotherapy field.
- Awareness of Radiation protection considerations of sealed, unsealed and x-ray generator sources
- Completion of relevant manufacturers certified training.

- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and maintain technical services.
