We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated ambitious individual to join a well- integrated team.
The post will commence on 4 February 2026 for a fixed 6 month contract.
The post will be primarily based at Freeman Hospital working alongside the orthopaedic tumour team. Newcastle is 1 of only 5 primary bone and soft tissue sarcoma units in the country, taking tertiary referrals from the North of England and beyond. The successful candidate will gain experience of the assessment and management of primary bone and soft tissue tumours, as well as metastatic bone and benign musculoskeletal lesions. They will be expected to participate regularly in the surgical management of these conditions including resection and reconstruction of tumours around limbs and pelvis. They will also attend the weekly sarcoma MDT, taking an active role in presenting and discussing patients.
Main duties of the job
The job will have an on call component on the trauma service, based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, which is the regional major trauma centre. Newcastle is the tertiary referral centre for major and polytrauma, pelvic fractures, limb reconstruction and bone infection. We also deal with a significant amount of general orthopaedic trauma and aim to provide exposure to common injuries such as hip, wrist and ankle fractures.
This post is ideal for post CCT trainees wishing to gain more experience in orthopaedic oncology, or trainees planning a CESR pathway who wish more experience of complex orthopaedics and major trauma. Post MRCS candidates who are looking for more experience prior to ST3 application will also be considered.

- Must hold full GMC registration at time of application.
- MBBS or equivalent.
- Satisfactory completion of Foundation training or equivalent.
- Evidence of smooth progression through training programmes.
- MRCS.
- Other relevant qualifications (ALS, ATLS, CCrISP).
- Other relevant postgraduate qualifications in science or education.

- NHS paid experience (clinical attachments not applicable)
- Middle grade level experience in Orthopaedic Surgery (NHS)
- Able to manage common medical emergencies.
- Good History and examination skills.
- Ability to formulate a working diagnosis.
