Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a children’s Occupational Therapist, with an understanding of social care responsibilities, to be part of the development of an integrated health and social care service, supporting the children and families in Newcastle.

This newly created team will consist of three qualified members of staff and one support staff member and will be co-located with the children’s community team based at Regent Point. Staffing will include 0.5 wte Band 8a Occupational Therapist: 1.0wte Band 7 Occupational Therapist, 1.0 wte Band 6 Occupational Therapist (rotational) 1.0 wte Band 3 administrator.

The role will be integrated within the Children’s Community Occupational Therapy Service, working closely with the wider therapy teams, to create a seamless and transparent experience for anyone referred to the service for equipment and/or adaptations reducing duplication and providing a more holistic approach to Occupational Therapy support.

Newcastle children’s Occupational Therapy is a well-established service supporting children and their families/carers across a range of settings including the Great North Children’s Hospital, specialist provision schools and mainstream school settings and their home environment.

The service will be hosted by Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and have reporting responsibilities to Newcastle city council and social care services.

Main duties of the job

The aim of this newly created team is to improve and enhance the services for children and families needing social care support, equipment, home adaptations across Newcastle. The service will be responsible for delivering high-quality patient focused support within the legislative frameworks of the Care act, Children and families act 2014, Children’s act 1989 and the Chronically Sick and Disabled Person’s act 1970.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

To provide a high standard of occupational therapy care to non-complex, complex and highly complex patients within specialty evidencing high-level problem solving, reasoning skills and independence of judgement.

The as Advanced OT will be a highly specialist practitioner and is the clinical lead for the Occupational Therapy Service within specialty providing highly specialist knowledge within the Trust and externally to therapists and other health care professionals from secondary and primary care across the region.

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria

  • In-depth clinical knowledge of medical/neurological, conditions and their effect on occupational performance (master’s level equivalent)
  • Highly developed understanding of OT process within acute setting
  • In-depth knowledge of health and social care policy, risk assessment and management
  • Extensive knowledge of a range of disability equipment
  • Extensive knowledge of eligibility criteria and procedures/policies relevant to disability equipment, minor housing adaptations
  • Highly specialist knowledge of moving and handling legislation and knowledge of current moving and handling best practice and associated equipment
  • Excellent understanding of professional ethics and their application into practice
  • Good knowledge of clinical governance
  • Evidence of CPD

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of undertaking research and audit projects
  • Knowledge of team dynamics and team building

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Good organisation, time management, problem solving and prioritisation skills

  • Significant post-registration experience incl experience within physical health Use of functional assessment and activity analysis

  • Experience of working with patients with physical disability e.g. stoke, neuro, reduced mobility etc
  • Team management experience

QUALIFICATION

Essential criteria

  • Degree/Diploma in OT
  • State registered with Health Professions Council
  • Member of BAOT
