Program Description

The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community and provides dedicated support to NCI's intramural Center for Cancer Research (CCR). The dedicated units provide expertise in electron microscopy, protein characterization, mass spectrometry, protein expression, optical microscopy, and genomics. These research efforts are an integral part of CCR at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR), where CRTP scientists work collaboratively with intramural NCI investigators to provide research technologies and expertise.

Key Roles/Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibility is to work on project for Center for Cancer Research (CCR) investigator at the National Cancer Institute focusing on mass spectrometry approaches.
  • Using broad sample processing methods in preparation for mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Daily operation of orbitrap mass spectrometers including data acquisition and maintenance.
  • Use different HPLC methods for prefractionation of samples in preparation for mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Perform variety of raw mass spectrometry data processing using Proteome Discoverer and other open source and proprietary software, pertaining to extracting information from mass spectrometry data. Perform post mass spectrometry search analysis using software such as R.
  • Grow tissue culture cells in preparation for variety of experiments such as quantitative global proteomics and metabolite analysis. Use different affinity purifications methods to enrich specific biomolecules before mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Gel electrophoresis, followed by western blotting and/or gel staining for monitoring protein expression and content. Estimate protein concentration using different spectroscopic methods.
  • Keep detailed records of all experiments and laboratory activities for documentation purposes and future publications.

Basic Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Molecular Biology or related field from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years of related experience is required.
  • Hands-on experience with standard laboratory equipment and techniques, including sample preparation and basic experimental setup.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Theoretical and hands on experience using mass spectrometers to analyze chemical and/or biological molecules/samples.
  • Some programing and data analysis skills are desirable.

The salary range posted is a full-time equivalent salary and will vary depending on scheduled hours for part time positions
