Non-exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible); full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday- Friday; 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; full benefits
 
This skilled position will have a primary focus on performing repairs and maintenance of HVACR equipment throughout Frederick County buildings and facilities. Work performed includes a wide variety of tasks related to building maintenance and installation of building wide components. Supervision is received from the Lead Technician and Chief of Facilities Maintenance.

NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy. For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate, with limited exception.

  • Install, service and maintain various types of HVAC equipment and controls associated with the building
  • Install, repair, adjust and maintain a wide variety of systems and equipment (e.g. air conditioning, heating, ventilation and refrigeration systems and equipment; emergency generators; oil, gas and electric burners, hot water and heat pump systems and other heating equipment; water heaters; circulator pumps; ice makers and chillers)
  • Maintain controls on HVAC systems and operate Building Automation Systems (BAS) controls
  • Repair leaks in water lines
  • Perform various electrical, plumbing and carpentry tasks associated with the building
  • Perform work in accordance with the Preventive Maintenance Program
  • Purchase material and equipment needed for jobs and keeping shop stocked
  • Respond to emergency calls
  • Work with and assist other building technicians
  • Move equipment and furniture when necessary
  • Perform other related duties as required

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN III REQUIREMENTS ($28.40-$48.28 per hour):
  • High school or vocational school graduation, or the equivalent
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Minimum 5 years of HVAC work experience
  • Possession of a current Maryland State HVACR Journeyman license
  • Possession of a current refrigerant Type II EPA or Universal EPA certification accepted by the State of Maryland
SENIOR MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN REQUIREMENTS ($32.51-$55.27 per hour):
  • High school or vocational school graduation, or the equivalent
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Minimum 7 years of HVAC work experience
  • Possession of a current Maryland State HVACR Master license
  • Possession of a current refrigerant Type II EPA or Universal EPA certification accepted by the State of Maryland
NOTE: Placement into position level is based upon such qualifications as education, work experience, and relevant certification. The upper pay ranges reflect possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions. For transfers and promotions, wage rates are calculated per County policy.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
  • Working knowledge of HVAC system installation and codes for commercial applications
  • Working knowledge of the methods and techniques, materials, tools and equipment commonly used in the installation and repair of HVAC systems
  • Working knowledge of the refrigeration cycle
  • Ability to accurately diagnose HVAC problems and make appropriate repairs
  • Ability to effectively perform the duties of various building maintenance trades
  • Knowledge of hazards associated with building and construction work, as well as appropriate safety precautions
  • Ability to effectively read and interpret building plans and specifications
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public
  • Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to accurately complete related paperwork
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to frequently walk, lift up to 50 pounds and drive; occasionally sit, climb, lift over 50 pounds, push and pull up to and over 40 pounds; reach and perform repetitive motions; rarely stoop/kneel/crouch and crawl.
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors, walk on uneven ground; frequently work outdoors,  work dirty, dusty environments; occasionally work in hot temperatures (above 100 degrees), work in cold temperatures (below 32 degrees), work in noisy environments, work near chemicals/fumes and has a potential exposure to infectious diseases; rarely  work at heights; and , work in confined spaces, work below grade level, work near machinery and required to wear protective equipment.
  • Employees in this classification are designated as Non-Essential
  • Available for varied working hours as needed and available for on call emergency situations
  • All current licenses must be maintained throughout employment and on file with the County and City for the purpose of obtaining permits for County work
  • This position is subject to assignment to a public safety complex.  Positions assigned to public safety complexes will be required to successfully pass a background investigation as determined by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.  Failure to pass the background investigation may result in termination of employment or revocation of the job offer.
 EXAMINATION PROCESS (may include):
1)  An evaluation of training and experience
2)  One or more interviews
3)  A pre-employment physical examination (if assigned to the RENO crew; a pre-employment DOT Physical examination) 
4)  A pre-employment background investigation through a public records search 
NOTE: For positions assigned to a public safety complex, a background investigation conducted by the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.
