JOB SUMMARY

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens seeks enthusiastic individuals passionate about nature and working with people to deliver educational programs and outreach events. During the spring through fall, On-Call Educators lead school tours and youth programs for the over 20,000 children who visit the Conservatory each year. Educators also work as classroom moderators for adult classes and assist with offsite outreach on evenings and weekends. The On-Call Educator position is ideal for those with flexible schedules who enjoy working in a fun, creative, and fast-paced environment!

Additional Information: As implied, “on-call” is an as-needed position, and hours vary throughout the year. Part-Time staff will receive complimentary Conservatory membership and participation in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS).

Compensation: $17/hour paid biweekly.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the School Programs Manager:

• Delivers educational programming in all venues as assigned, including school programs, outreach, scout programs, and other educational events.
• Must commit to working 2 shifts a week in the months of March, April and May and a minimum of 1 shift a month for the rest of the calendar year, with the opportunity to work more hours. However, hours are not guaranteed as the workload depends on public demand.
• Works cooperatively with Community Outreach and Education staff to implement creative, fun, and marketable education and outreach programs.
• Acts as a classroom moderator for adult horticulture and fine arts programs.
• Performs other duties as assigned and demonstrates a focus on serving the visitors and guests of the Conservatory, maintaining the highest standards of customer service.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• High School Degree or G.E.D. required; 1-4 years of Higher Education with a focus in any of the following:
• natural resources, culinary, art, environmental or interpretive education, horticulture, or early childhood development preferred.
• Experience interacting with the public and teaching children and youth in an informal or formal education environment is preferred.
• Must be able to provide own transportation to various worksites when delivering off-site programming and outreach initiatives.

• A professional demeanor with highly developed interpersonal skills.
• Self-confident and skilled at public speaking.
• Strong communication skills, including ability to regularly access and communicate via email (Outlook).
• Ability to deliver educational programs and learning experiences to various age groups.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
• Ability to pass a background check and fingerprinting screen for working with children and youth.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule (weekends and holiday scheduling sometimes required).
• Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and remain on an exact schedule of events.
• Ability to walk up to 3 miles/day and lift up to 25 pounds with or without accommodation.
