NATURE OF WORK

Under general supervision, prepares assigned cases for prosecution and disposition by plea or trial; drafts and argues motions; conducts preliminary hearings; drafts plea agreements, and participates in all aspects of case preparation, court and jury trials, and probation violation proceedings. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares and analyzes cases; performs correspondence activities with defense attorneys for exchange of discovery and making plea recommendations; prepares testimony outlines. 
  • Prepares cases for docket; reviews facts and criminal records; sets dates for trials and hearings. 
  • Reviews police reports and tickets to determine if charges should be filed; fills out charge forms and warrant applications. 
  • Performs research regarding the status of law on issues relevant to cases; assists other with research projects as needed. 
  • Conducts victim interviews to assess the case; prepares witness outlines; explains courtroom procedures.
  • Represents the State of Missouri at Bench and Jury Trials and Motion and Revocation Hearings. 
  • Represents Director of Revenue in Petitions for Review of Administrative Hearings.
  • Serves as 24-hour on call Prosecuting Attorney on a rotating schedule to issue arrest and search warrants during non-office hours. 
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings. 
  • Participate in continued legal education as required. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  

Work is performed in a standard office environment and involves sitting for extended periods of time, standing, walking, bending reaching, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds; may be exposed to potentially hostile defendants.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Doctorate in Law. License to practice law in the state of Missouri. 

 

Depending on area of assignment, a valid Driver’s License, Notary Public License, and/or other specialized certifications may be required.

 

Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Missouri.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

Knowledge of: 

  • County and department policies and procedures. 
  • Applications of legal principles to individual cases. 
  • Methods, procedures, and practices of legal research. 
  • Franklin County ordinances, general law, and State and Federal case law. 
  • Established precedents and sources of legal reference. 
  • Principles and practices of project management and administration. 
  • Rules of evidence. 

 

Skills in: 

  • Analyzing appraising and organizing facts, evidence, and precedents in assigned cases. 
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Reviewing and analyzing information to determine the proper course of action. 
  • Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing. 
  • Preparing cases for trial. 
  • Presenting detailed materials clearly and logically. 
  • Conducting legal research. 
  • Preparing legal documents and records. and proposed legal opinions. 

Salary : $60,000 - $62,500
