NATURE OF WORK
Under limited supervision, manages a caseload in representing the State of Missouri on criminal prosecutions to include motions, preliminary hearings, plea agreements, and all aspects of court, jury trials and probation violation proceedings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Reviews police reports to determine if charges should be filed; requests additional information from officers as needed; conducts interviews with officers, victims, and witnesses.
  • Files charges and prepares necessary documents to file with courts; sets bonds and specials conditions for each case.
  • Prepares cases for docket by reviewing and analyzing facts, issues, and criminal histories of defendants.
  • Prepares questions for all hearings; meets with and prepares witnesses for hearings, preliminary hearings, and motions to suppress.
  • Researches case law; prepares notes, exhibits, presentations, motions in limine, and jury instructions.
  • Conducts all aspects of trials.
  • Attends and participates in monthly case review meetings and various other staff and client meetings as needed.
  • Completes continuing education as required.
  • Serves as 24-hour on call Prosecuting Attorney on a rotating schedule to issue arrest and search warrants during non-office hours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is performed in a standard office environment and involves sitting for extended periods of time, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Doctorate in Law; AND three (3) years of experience in criminal law, which includes some trial experience.

Depending on area of assignment, a valid Driver’s License, Notary Public License, and/or other specialized certifications may be required.

Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Missouri.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Knowledge of:
  • County and department policies and procedures.
  • Applications of legal principles to individual cases.
  • Methods, procedures, and practices of legal research.
  • Franklin County ordinances, general law, and State and Federal case law.
  • Established precedents and sources of legal reference.

Skills in:
  • Analyzing appraising and organizing facts, evidence, and precedents in assigned cases.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Reviewing and analyzing information to determine the proper course of action.
  • Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Preparing cases for trial.
  • Presenting detailed materials clearly and logically.
