Incumbents to a position in this class perform construction and repair work on sewers, manholes and receivers for the city's sewer systems. Work is performed in accordance with contract plans and specifications and is reviewed by the Sewer Construction Inspector. This position differs from the position of Maintenance Assistant (Sewer Cleaning) in that incumbents must have the knowledge and skill used in construction activities. Incumbents may be on call 24 hours a day. Direct supervision is received from Sewer Maintenance Supervisor I.
Examples of work (Illustration Only)
Constructs and repairs sewers, receivers, manholes, catch basins, tunnel work, connections, etc.:
Operates air compressors, asphalt breakers, bobcat power winches, cement mixers, water pumps, gas tampers, and other equipment used in the construction or repair of sewers, manholes and receivers;
Drives truck to and from work site;
Prepares detailed reports of work performed;
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have two years of full-time experience in sewer maintenance work.
Special Requirement: Applicants must possess a current Class A or Class B New York State Drivers License at time of appointment and must be maintained during employment.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.
Proof of education must be presented at time of appointment.

“In conformance with Section 85-a of the Civil Service Law, children of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty shall be entitled to receive an additional ten points in a competitive examination for original appointment in the same municipality in which his or her parent has served. If you are qualified to participate in this examination and are a child of a firefighter or police officer killed in the line of duty in this municipality, please inform this office of this matter when you submit your application for examination. A candidate claiming such credit has a minimum of two months from the application deadline to provide the necessary documentation to verify additional credit eligibility. However, no credit may be added after the eligible list has been established.”
