Foreign Language Interpreter

The primary purpose of this position is to provide a range of interpreting services that include both verbal and written communication and require an understanding of programmatic terminology and protocol. Will assist the agency in meeting compliance issues related to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This position will accompany DSS staff to homes, schools, court rooms, as needed to assist individuals with limited English proficiency. This position will assist all DSS staff with individuals who present at the DSS who have limited English proficiency. In addition, this position will be responsible for providing coverage for the mail, front desk, and switchboard during downtime.

Public Contact — The interpreter is utilized by supervisors and staff for all programs in the agency. This position provides a range of interpreting services that include both verbal and written, and requires an understanding of programmatic terminology and protocol. This position will accompany DSS staff to homes, schools, court room, as needed to assist individuals with limited English proficiency. This position will assist all DSS staff with individuals who present at the DSS who have limited English proficiency. This position will assist the agency in meeting compliance issues related to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, this includes completing the NC DSS-10001 each time the interpreter assists a Limited English Proficiency (LEP) customer as well as documenting the assistance on the Interpreter Log. 
Information Provided — Communication between the staff and customers is a vital and essential responsibility for the interpreter. The interpreter must make sure that everything is translated exactly and accurately between the staff and the customers. During intake, the interpreter explains to the customers their rights and responsibilities according to the program the customers are applying. The interpreter has basic knowledge of the rules and regulations of the various Economic Service programs within the agency. In return, the interpreter must be able to tell the customers the programs for which they may be eligible. During the intake, the interpreter emphasizes to the customers the importance of telling the truth and giving accurate and correct information so they do not commit fraud. The interpreter lets the customer know what is being done, what they are signing, and what is expected from them so that their application/review can be processed properly and expeditiously. The interpreter will communicate with the customers whenever and wherever needed and will help tell the customers where they need to go and what they need to do. The interpreter will provide assistance to the customers as quickly as possible and in the order they come into the agency. The interpreter translates various agency forms so that the customers will be able to understand what is being sent to them and what is being said. The interpreter also translates mail and letters that come into the agency. The interpreter will go on home visits with staff from Children Services, Adult Services, and the Economic Services Division. The interpreter will accompany staff members from any of these units in order to help the staff member investigate and /or ascertain information from the customers. High School or GED and one year of experience in interpreting and translating English and the required foreign language in a setting that requires a knowledge of the programs or services. Demonstrate the fluency and skill necessary to meet the needs of the organization and client populations served.Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire.
