The Director of Children’s Ministry (DCM) develops a meaningful program of discipleship, mission outreach, fellowship, and music for children from birth through 6th grade and their families. The DCM is responsible for the recruitment and mentoring of volunteers as teachers, teacher assistants, and special event volunteers. The DCM is required to work 25-30 hours per week. The DCM works under the direct supervision of the Church Pastor and in accordance with FUMC’s Personnel Handbook.

● Organizational Skills: Ability to wisely plan and structure children’s activities of various sizes such as classroom, Vacation Bible School, and large events of over 400 attendees.

● Team Orientation: Demonstrates interest, skill, and success in working with other FUMC staff and volunteers and the cross-church community; promotes program goals ahead of personal agendas.

● Commitment to Excellence: Takes pride in work and strives for excellence to achieve the best possible results. Looks for opportunities to improve work practices, generates ideas for improvement, pays attention to the quality of work, and persists when difficulties arise. Tries innovative ways to get things done, considers situations from new perspectives, and evaluates work results for effectiveness.

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

1. Previous experience in a variety of children’s ministries.

2. Understanding of early childhood development, abilities, and requirements and able to recommend and evaluate curriculum for age appropriateness.

3. Able to communicate well orally and in writing.

4. Knowledgeable of the United Methodist Church’s (UMC) mission, beliefs, and teachings; be supportive of these beliefs; and be supportive of the mission and vision of FUMC.

5. Skilled at team collaboration and coordination.

6. Able to keep confidence and maintain information.

7. Proficient with Microsoft Windows/Office, Zoom, Google apps (Gmail, drive, etc.), social media, e.g. Facebook, with general email and texting experience.

8. A college degree is preferred.

9. A UMC background is preferred.

REGULAR DUTIES

1. Coordinate and manage an effective children’s program dedicated to nurturing their faith journey through group building, worship, discipleship, mission, and outreach.

2. Manage and update curriculum, also ensuring classes have appropriate space and all materials are in line with the requirements of church’s children’s programs.

3. Under the guidance of the Pastor, lead and coordinate children’s moments during worship services and for recurring and seasonal activities.

4. Ensure nursery staff are available during church services and special events.

5. Lead a weekly chapel service for the church preschool.

6. Coordinate and train volunteers to facilitate the children’s ministry.

7. Organize and execute large events focused on children’s ministry.

6. Maintain frequent communication with Pastor, office staff, volunteers, and parents.

9. Participate in continuing education events offered by the UMC each year.
