As a Before & After School Counselor, you'll help create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment where children can start and end their school day surrounded by caring adults, supportive friendships, and opportunities to have fun. More than a supervisor, you'll serve as a positive role model, mentor, and trusted adult who helps children grow in confidence while bringing the YMCA's Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility to life every day.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision of children at school-based and YMCA program locations.
- Create a safe, positive, and inclusive environment where every child feels welcomed, valued, and supported.
- Lead and participate in games, crafts, outdoor play, homework time, enrichment activities, and group experiences.
- Build meaningful relationships with children while serving as a positive role model, mentor, and trusted adult.
- Demonstrate and reinforce the YMCA's Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in every interaction.
- Foster positive relationships with families, school staff, and fellow YMCA team members.
- Maintain safe, organized, and clean program spaces while following YMCA policies, procedures, and licensing standards.
- Complete attendance, sign-in/sign-out, and other required program documentation.
- Attend required trainings and staff meetings.
- Provide support at other program sites as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous experience working with school-age children is required.
- Positive attitude with strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to lead activities and manage groups in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment.
- Experience working with diverse populations is preferred.
- CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, and other required YMCA trainings must be completed as required.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively participate in games, recreational activities, and outdoor play.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and move program equipment and supplies as needed.
- Ability to remain active throughout the workday, including standing, walking, bending, and kneeling.
- Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
