Position Summary

The Assistant Swim Coach helps create a positive, athlete-centered environment where swimmers can develop skills, build confidence, and reach their individual goals. Working under the direction of the Head Swim Team Coach and Head Developmental Coach, this position supports daily practices, swim meets, and team activities while helping deliver a high-quality experience for athletes and families.

Key ResponsibilitiesAthlete Development

Assist in leading swim team practices that promote skill development, proper technique, and athlete progression. Support swimmers of varying ages and abilities by providing instruction, encouragement, and constructive feedback. Help create an environment where athletes feel challenged, supported, and motivated to achieve their personal best.

Program Support

Work collaboratively with coaching staff to deliver a safe, organized, and engaging swim team experience. Assist with practices, swim meets, team events, and other program activities while helping ensure consistency across training groups. Support the implementation of team goals, coaching strategies, and YMCA swim team standards.

Family & Community Engagement

Build positive relationships with swimmers, families, volunteers, and fellow staff members. Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, sportsmanship, and the YMCA's core values. Help foster a team culture where athletes feel welcomed, encouraged, and connected.

Safety & Risk Management

Maintain a safe and well-supervised environment by following YMCA, USA Swimming, and team policies and procedures. Ensure required certifications remain current and respond appropriately to emergencies while prioritizing the safety and well-being of all participants.

Qualifications

• Minimum 16 years of age.
• Previous competitive swimming experience preferred.
• Previous coaching, teaching, or youth development experience preferred.
• Current CPR, First Aid, AED, and Safety Training for Swim Coaches certifications, or ability to obtain upon hire.
• YMCA and/or USA Swimming coaching credentials, or ability to obtain as required.
• Knowledge of competitive swimming techniques and stroke development.
• Ability to work effectively with children, teens, families, and fellow staff.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• Commitment to the YMCA mission, values, and youth development philosophy.

This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and actively supervise swimmers for extended periods of time. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in a pool environment and occasionally lift or move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. The ability to demonstrate swimming techniques and respond quickly in emergency situations is required.
