What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dog Grooming Specialist position at Four-S Boarding LLC?
Job Summary - Dog Washing / Grooming Position:
Dog Groomer is paid on 55% commission and keeps all grooming tips for dogs only groomed. Dogs boarded and groomed tips will be split amongst all staff. 401(k) 6% company matching is available with 24 month vesting period. Company matching starts immediately. Uniforms are provided by the employer.
We are are a dog boarding facility with 36 kennels and have around 50-60 pets during holidays and summer. We employ 4 full time pet attendants and flex to 6-8 during holidays and summer. Customers usually request baths or grooming prior to pick up at the end of their stay. We use online scheduling software so groomer is only required to come in to work when there are scheduled grooming and this is visible by the groomer at home. So the groomer will know what grooming is to be completed for the day before you ever come in to work, except last minute requests.
Equipment provided by employer: high velocity heated hair dryer, 3 x cage dryers, rolling tool box, electrically operated grooming table, stainless steel grooming tub, UV sterilization cabinet, temporary holding cages, rolling 6' tall metal cabinet for products/ storage, grooming room AC/Heating, tile floor and floor drain.
Personal grooming tools, trimmers, blades and scissors must be provided by the groomer. Everyone uses different tools, they are to be self provided by the employee.
Groomer Duties:
a. Will be required to be completed when requested by customers and billed appropriately.
b. All grooming calls/ texts will be made with the Four-S Boarding business phone and not the groomer’s personal phone.
c. Dogs will be completely dry before being released to the owner. Use of the hair dryer or cage dryer will ensure the pet is completely dry.
d. Grooming tools and blades will be sanitized in the UV sterilization cabinet or sterilization liquid prior to grooming the next customer pet.
e. Groomers with previous clientele may continue to groom existing customers but may not continue to advertise and gain new customers to their own private grooming business.
f. Four-S Boarding and Grooming will purchase the expendable grooming products for the groomer to use. Only those products will be used on the Four-S Boarding and Grooming customer’s pets. No external products may be brought in without express permission from one of the owners.
g. Soap and Shampoos mixed from concentrate will only be kept for 48 hrs. from time of mixing, after that the expired product must discarded and new products mixed. Adding water dilutes the preservatives allowing bacteria to grow. Mix bottles will be labelled with contents. Additionally, don’t mix more product then plans to be used for that day of scheduled grooming. Don’t waste product by over mixing.
h. The groomer will need to report product levels a week in advance to allow time to procure replacement product.
i. Pet cologne will be used on all pets receiving any baths or bath related services, unless specifically asked by the owner not to use it.
j. No appliances, tools, expendable products (i.e. shampoos, chemicals) or materials (i.e. towels, bandanas) may be removed from the property of Four-S Boarding and Grooming. Those items are to be used for Four-S Boarding’s customers and to be used only on the company property.
k. Care must be taken with all appliances, furniture or equipment at Four-S Boarding and Grooming to ensure it isn’t unnecessarily damaged from dropping or slamming.
l. The grooming room needs to be completely clean and free of pet hair from the day’s grooming.
i. Hair dryer/ cage dryer filters need to be cleaned.
ii. Pet holding cages need to be cleaned and free of all hair.
iii. Bathing tub needs to be cleaned of all hair, to include the walls, drain, sprayer, faucet, and ramp.
iv. Floor and under furniture and equipment needs to be swept, vacuumed and mopped.
v. Floor, tub and tables need to be sanitized.
m. Groomer must provide their own grooming towels and launder them at the end of the day to prepare for the next day’s grooming. The Four-S Boarding towels are for dog dish cleaning and not for grooming.
n. If using holding cages for grooming, groomer must be present while pets are in holding cages. They are not for overnight use.
o. Groomer must meet with on duty staff and discuss appointments to be completed for the day. On duty staff will brief groomer of any last-minute changes that may have occurred or special circumstances around a grooming that will take place.
p. Groomer will ensure all grooming tasks are complete before leaving the facility for the day and lastly check-out with the on-duty staff to announce your departure for the day and exchange any last-minute instructions.
q. Four-S Boarding and Grooming owners may assign instructional videos to the groomer to ensure their continuing education in the field of grooming. Videos will be paid at the facility attendant hourly rate.
Duties
- Perform professional grooming services including bathing, trimming, brushing, and styling to meet each pet’s specific needs and breed standards
- Handle animals safely and compassionately during grooming procedures, utilizing proper restraint techniques
- Assist with pet care routines such as nail trimming, ear cleaning, and coat maintenance to promote overall health and hygiene
- Support veterinary staff with basic animal handling tasks and assist in maintaining a clean and organized grooming area
- Engage with pet owners to discuss grooming preferences, provide advice on at-home pet care, and ensure customer satisfaction
- Maintain detailed records of grooming services provided, special instructions, and any health concerns observed during appointments
- Assist with kennel cleaning, feeding, and general animal handling duties as needed to support overall facility operations
Requirements
- Prior experience in pet grooming or animal handling is highly preferred; certification in pet grooming is a plus
- Knowledge of dog training techniques and veterinary experience enhances your ability to handle animals effectively
- Strong animal handling skills with the ability to restrain pets safely during grooming procedures
- Experience working with veterinary technicians or assistants is beneficial for understanding animal health needs
- Ability to lift heavy objects such as large dogs or equipment safely and comfortably throughout the day
- Excellent customer service skills to communicate clearly with pet owners and team members
- Familiarity with pet sitting, kennel management, or heavy lifting tasks demonstrates versatility in animal care roles
- A genuine passion for animals combined with a proactive attitude to learn new skills and improve service quality
