ROLE SUMMARY
The Director of Engineering is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of engineering service delivery, technical strategy, and product innovation. This individual will manage a high-performing team of engineers, and serve as the primary liaison between technical staff, clients, and internal stakeholders. The Director will also be actively involved in pre-sales engineering, client relationship management, and revenue growth through technical consulting and solution development.
Our clients typically range from 20 to 300 end users across a mix of industries. The Director of Engineering will design scalable and sustainable solutions that address the unique needs of SMB and mid-market organizations.
This role reports directly to the CEO and directly manages all engineering and infrastructure team members.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Engineering Leadership
- Manage, mentor, and develop a team of engineers across multiple technical domains
- Oversee technical project delivery, ensuring quality, consistency, and alignment with client goals
- Implement engineering best practices, standard operating procedures, and professional development frameworks
- Act as the final escalation point for complex technical issues and client concerns, ensuring swift resolution and team alignment
Client Engagement & Consulting
- Act as a trusted advisor to key clients, guiding strategic infrastructure, security, and modernization initiatives
- Conduct technical discovery, solution design, and presentations during client meetings
- Maintain executive-level relationships with enterprise and SMB clients
Sales Engineering & Service Development
- Partner with the sales team to scope and present new technology solutions and packaged service offerings aligned with client needs
- Lead technical responses to RFPs and support sales cycles with demos, diagrams, and architecture proposals
Strategic Planning & Innovation
- In a growing team, you’ll also contribute cross-functionally — from hiring and vendor relationships to service delivery optimization and internal tooling improvements
- Identify opportunities for operational efficiency and automation
- Drive the adoption of modern infrastructure, cloud, and security practices
- Contribute to company strategy and long-term planning as part of the senior leadership team
Reporting & Documentation Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain regular reporting on engineering team performance, project status, and key metrics for executive leadership
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all client-facing solutions, project deliverables, internal infrastructure, and engineering processes
- Develop and enforce documentation standards and templates to ensure consistency across engineering outputs
- Collaborate with the operations and account management teams to produce documentation for compliance, client onboarding, and technical audits
- Support knowledge transfer and continuity through well-maintained internal wikis, runbooks, and technical playbooks
- Track and report on SLAs, escalations, and system uptime to guide service improvements and resource planning
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 10 years of experience in IT engineering, with at least 3 years in a management or leadership role
- Proven experience managing technical teams in a client-facing environment (MSP experience strongly preferred)
- Strong understanding of networking, cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS), virtualization, and cybersecurity
- Demonstrated ability to translate technical concepts into business value for clients and executives
- Track record of successful pre-sales engineering and service development
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including executive-level presentations
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS
- Cisco CCNP or CCIE
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) – Cloud Platform & Infrastructure
- AWS Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional)
- ITIL, PMP, or other project/process certifications
