What are the responsibilities and job description for the News Editor position at Fortune?
News Editor
Fortune is seeking an editor responsible for leading high-impact business coverage at Fortune, with a particular focus on fast, insightful digital journalism and Fortune Intelligence AI-assisted reporting. The editor combines hands-on editing, original reporting, and newsroom leadership to deliver authoritative stories that drive traffic, subscriptions, and engagement across Fortuneʼs platforms.
This editor plays a central role in Fortune Intelligence, Fortuneʼs generative AI–assisted news initiative. Responsibilities include identifying stories where AI can accelerate first drafts or surface relevant context, guiding prompts and workflows, and then rigorously editing all Fortune Intelligence stories to verify facts, ensure nuance, and align with Fortuneʼs voice. The editor will also help evolve best practices and newsroom standards for the ethical and transparent use of AI in reporting and production.
The news editor reports, writes, and edits a mix of breaking business news, deeply reported enterprise features, service journalism, and multimedia stories across core verticals such as markets, corporate leadership, technology, finance, and the workplace. The role includes oversight of Fortune Intelligence coverage, where AI assists with initial drafts and data synthesis, while the editor ensures accuracy, context, and Fortuneʼs editorial standards. This editor acts as a key player in Fortuneʼs digital strategy, helping grow audience, loyalty, and revenue through smart story selection and polished execution.
Key responsibilities:
- Report and edit breaking business news and digital features, including stories developed with the assistance of generative AI under the Fortune Intelligence banner.
- Pitch, assign, and shape enterprise, investigative, and explanatory pieces that help business leaders make sense of market moves, corporate strategy, technology disruption, and labor trends.
- Maintain rigorous standards of accuracy, fairness, sourcing, and clarity, with particular care around AI-assisted copy and data-driven analyses.
- Collaborate with reporters, associate editors, video and audio producers, and social and audience teams to package stories for maximum impact across web, newsletters, social, and events.
- Use audience, SEO, and engagement data to refine beats, headlines, and formats, helping drive sustained digital growth and loyalty for Fortuneʼs news and service franchises.
- Develop and mentor talent, providing clear editorial direction, structural and line edits, and feedback to strengthen reportersʼ sourcing, storytelling, and analytical depth.
- Represent Fortuneʼs journalism externally—including on video, at conferences, and in partner or syndication environments—when needed to amplify key coverage.
Skills and experience
- 6-10 years of business journalism experience, including substantial time as an editor or senior reporter covering companies, markets, technology, or the economy.
- Demonstrated ability to run or significantly contribute to a fast-paced, SEO-savvy digital newsroom that produces multiple high-quality stories per day.
- Strong news judgment, with a track record of identifying distinctive angles on competitive stories and crafting compelling, clean copy under tight deadlines.
- Comfort working with data, corporate filings, rankings products (such as the Fortune 500 and related lists), and AI tools to generate insight-rich business coverage.
- Experience collaborating with video, podcast, social, and audience teams, and an understanding of how stories travel and perform on different platforms.
- Excellent communication and coaching skills, with the ability to give clear editorial guidance and champion ambitious, original journalism.
