JOB TITLE: Parent Educator


REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Early Learning


FLSA: Non-Exempt

POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY
The Parent Educator will improve the early childhood education program by assisting the professional staff with its implementation.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
The Parent Educator shall have a minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent, be competent in the non-professional duties to be performed and meet one of the criteria listed below:

 

  • Certification in one of the following:
  • Elementary Education
  • Early Childhood Special Education
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Vocational Home Economics


Occupational Child Care Services and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents,


A two-year associate degree or two-year certificate program in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or Nursing and demonstrated ability in working with young children and their parents;


Sixty college hours and two years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents; or


Five years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents;


Parent Educators must show successful completion of approved training in parent education regardless of previous training and experience according to the following schedule:

 

  • A minimum of 30 hours of preservice training
  • A minimum of 20 hours of inservice training during the first year of employment in an approved program;
  • A minimum of 15 hours of inservice training during the second year of employment in an approved program
  • A minimum of 10 hours inservice training for the third, fourth, and fifth years of employment in an approved program.


Parenting experience is strongly recommended but not required.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide private contacts to families in accordance with state and district guidelines.
2. Write and carry out lesson plans and activities for each personal visit.
3. Keep accurate records of caseloads and each personal visit.
4. Offer parents on caseload an annual screening for children three months of age or older.
5. Be proficient with the appropriate screening instruments.
6. Assist in the planning and implementation of group meetings for the year (approximately 8-10).
7. Assist with recruitment for the Parents As Teachers Program.
8. Attend appropriate in-services during the year.


ADDITIONAL DUTIES
1. Perform other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Early Learning and/or the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services.
2. Effectively communicate, verbally and in written form, with administrators, staff, and the community as needed.

MENTAL DEMANDS
Ability to maintain highly confidential information; communicate clearly both orally and in writing, and/or ability to reason and make appropriate decisions. Solve a variety of problems in many different situations and have strong attention to detail.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this position an employee is regularly required to sit, talk, present, and hear. The employee is often required to stand, reach, bend, and lift up to 20 pounds. The employee should have excellent listening, talking, and speech abilities.
This employee must be willing and available to work one to two evenings a week to successfully complete home visits.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment will be on an at-will basis for 9 months, beginning with the first day of the work calendar or at the time of employment for the duration of the school year with prorated personal leave. Each Parent Educator will be provided a work calendar showing the specific daily work schedule of the employee. The work calendar may be modified by the Board of Education at any time, as needs dictate.
Seven hours (including a 30-minute non-paid lunch period) will constitute a workday for full-time parent educators. A definite daily schedule will be established by the Coordinator of Early Learning and the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services.

Part-time parent educators work either 16.25 or 20 hours per week. Job responsibilities will be prorated and modified as appropriate.
The yearly salary will be disbursed in twenty-four (24) equal payments.


EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of support staff personnel.
