JOB TITLE: Occupational or Physical Therapist

 

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Special Services

 

FLSA: Exempt

POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY
To help reduce or eliminate physical or motor skill impairments that interfere with the individual student’s ability to benefit from the district’s educational program.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
The Occupational or Physical Therapist shall have a Bachelor’s Degree and current State therapists’ licensure.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students’ needs and reduce or eliminate existing physical or motor skill impairments.
2. Assists teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified impairments.
3. Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of physical or occupational therapy needs.
4. Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
5. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student’s daily activities.
6. Prepares for provision of therapy services and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the building principal or administrator.
7. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policies, and administrative regulations.
8. Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
9. Assists in the selection of equipment and other materials as required for the student to participate in and benefit from the district’s educational program.
10. Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES
1. Provides for his or her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
2. Possess the ability to effectively communicate, verbally, and in written form, with administrators, staff, and the community as needed.
3. Possess a valid driver’s license to travel between district buildings as necessary.
4. All other duties assigned by the supervisor.

 

MENTAL DEMANDS
Ability to maintain highly confidential information; communicate clearly both orally and in writing, and/or ability to reason and make appropriate decisions. Solve a variety of problems in many different situations.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing these duties, the employee is regularly required to reach, climb, bend, stand, and walk. The employee normally uses hand strength to grasp and hold.
The employee will lift up to 20 pounds often and occasionally carry, move, push, or pull up to 100 pounds.  The employee should have good dexterity, hearing, and speech capabilities.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The employee will work in a school environment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employment will be on an at-will basis concurrent with the teacher work calendar as assigned with the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services. Employment will be on an at-will basis for 9 1⁄2 months beginning July 1, or from
the time of employment for the duration of the school year with prorated personal leave. The work calendar may be modified by the Board of Education at any time, as needs dictate.
Seven and one-half hours (including a non-paid 30 minute lunch period) will constitute a workday for occupational and physical therapists. A definite daily schedule will be established by the building principal and approved by the Assistant Superintendent for Special Services.  The yearly salary will be disbursed in twenty-four (24) equal payments.

 

EVALUATION

End of the year performance evaluations will then continue annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional support staff personnel.
