Skilled Trade Technician

FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (FVSU), a state and land-grant institution of the University System of Georgia, invites applications for the position of Skilled Trade Technician.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Maintenance Technician performs skilled carpentry and painting work to maintain, repair, and enhance university buildings, facilities, and furnishings. The role focuses on carpentry, painting, and related finish work, ensuring a safe, attractive, and functional learning and work environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Construct, install, and repair doors, windows, locks, cabinets, shelving, furniture, and fixtures.
• Perform framing, trimming, drywall patching, and finishing work on campus structures.
• Inspect and maintain woodwork, ceilings, and other building components.
• Prepare surfaces by sanding, patching, cleaning, and priming
• Apply paints, stains, varnishes, and coatings to interior and exterior surfaces.
• Assist with furniture moves, event setups, and light maintenance when needed.
• Maintain an inventory of carpentry and paint supplies and ensure proper tool use
• Respond to service requests and complete work orders in a timely, professional manner

QUALIFICATIONS

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years of experience.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to meet or exceed the University's attendance and punctuality standards.
• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
• Knowledge of building materials, finishes, and methods for carpentry and painting

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Exposure to dust, paint fumes, and outdoor weather conditions.
• Frequent standing, bending, climbing, and lifting.
• May require evening or weekend work for emergencies or special events.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work indoors and outdoors.
• Bending at waist, sitting, kneeling, laying horizontally, climbing, walking, etc., as job may require.
