Educational Assistant – Behavior Support (Elementary)
POSITION SUMMARY
The Educational Assistant – Behavior Support provides direct support to elementary students who require assistance with behavioral, social-emotional, and academic skills.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Support
- Assist with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
- Provide one-on-one or small-group support to students with behavioral and social-emotional needs.
- Use proactive behavior strategies, positive reinforcement, and de-escalation techniques.
- Support students in developing self-regulation, problem-solving, and appropriate social skills.
- Track and document student behavior, interventions, and progress as directed.
ClassroomInstructional Support
- Assist the classroom teacher with instructional activities, adapted materials, and differentiated support.
- Help maintain a predictable, safe, and structured classroom environment.
- Supervise students during transitions, recess, lunch, and other non-classroom activities.
- Assist with data collection for academic and behavioral monitoring.
Behavior ManagementSafety
- Follow school and district behavior protocols, including crisis prevention and intervention strategies (e.g., CPI, Safety-Care).
- Participate in crisis de-escalation and physical intervention only when necessary and trained to do so.
- Ensure student and staff safety during challenging behaviors.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all ethical and legal guidelines regarding student information.
CollaborationCommunication
- Communicate professionally with the teacher, behavior specialist, and support team about student needs and progress.
- Participate in team meetings, training, and professional development related to behavior and instructional support.
- Work collaboratively and maintain positive relationships with all staff, students, and families.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Must pass para-pro praxis test or have and associates degeree or an equavilent of 2 year of college.
- Experience working with children, especially those with behavioral or special needs, strongly preferred.
- Training or willingness to be trained in behavior intervention strategies and trauma-informed practices.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and consistent during challenging situations.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to follow structured behavior plans.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, or sit for extended periods.
- Ability to respond quickly during behavioral incidents.
