Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Drafting & Designer Intern to support engineering and production design efforts within our metal fabrication operation. This internship is designed for Industrial Engineering students pursuing a bachelor's degree who want hands-on experience designing real, manufacturable metal components. The intern will work closely with engineering, production, and shop teams to design modular metal components used in fabricated assemblies and production systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and modify 3D models and 2D fabrication drawings using SolidWorks and/or Fusion 360
  • Design modular metal components and assemblies optimized for manufacturability and repeat production
  • Generate flat patterns, DXF files, and part drawings for laser cutting, turret punching, and press brake forming
  • Apply basic DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly) principles
  • Revise designs based on shop feedback, tolerances, and production constraints
  • Maintain organized CAD files, revision control, and part numbering systems
  • Assist with prototype development, fit-up validation, and design improvements
  • Collaborate with engineers, operators, and production staff to support continuous improvement

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's program in Industrial Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Extensive experience with SolidWorks or Fusion 360 (academic, project-based, or internship experience)
  • Strong understanding of parametric modeling, assemblies, and drawing creation
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and basic GD&T concepts
  • Interest in metal fabrication, manufacturing processes, and industrial design

Preferred Skills (Not Required)

  • Experience designing for sheet metal fabrication
  • Familiarity with laser cutting, turret punching, and press brake forming processes
  • Basic understanding of materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
  • Exposure to CAM workflows, DXF exports, or nesting software
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving mindset
