Civil/Structural Designer – Nuclear

This position can be remote for senior level candidates.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Civil/Structural Designer to support engineering and design activities for nuclear power generation facilities. This position will develop and modify civil and structural drawings associated with plant modifications, equipment upgrades, maintenance projects, and capital improvements.

The ideal candidate will have strong civil/structural design experience, advanced CAD capabilities, and the ability to independently develop designs from engineering input, field conditions, calculations, specifications, and applicable standards. Senior candidates may also provide technical direction, review design work, and support planning and execution of complex design assignments.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed civil and structural designs, layouts, drawings, and modifications for nuclear power plant facilities and equipment.
• Prepare and revise drawings including structural steel layouts and details; concrete foundations and supports; equipment foundations and anchorage details; platforms, stairs, ladders, and access structures; wall, floor, and roof modifications; embedded plates and structural attachments; site, grading, drainage, and civil layouts
• Perform design work using engineering calculations, sketches, specifications, vendor drawings, design criteria, field information, and existing plant documentation.
• Independently evaluate and adapt established design methods, procedures, and criteria to meet project requirements.
• Apply advanced CAD techniques and structural design applications to develop accurate, constructible design packages.
• Support development of plant modification and design change packages, including drawing revisions, affected-document identification, and structural interfaces.
• Perform field walkdowns to verify existing conditions, dimensions, equipment locations, structural interfaces, interferences, constructability, and drawing accuracy.
• Review existing plant drawings and documentation to identify design interfaces and potential impacts to existing structures.
• Coordinate with Civil/Structural Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, I&C, Operations, Maintenance, and Construction.
• Evaluate vendor drawings and equipment information for structural support, anchorage, and installation requirements.
• Identify design conflicts and constructability concerns and work with engineering to develop resolutions.
• Maintain configuration control and ensure drawings accurately reflect approved plant modifications.
• Perform checking and review of drawings for technical accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
• Support resolution of RFIs, field questions, design issues, and construction discrepancies.
• Assist with drawing lists, design estimates, schedules, resource requirements, and execution planning.
• Provide technical guidance to junior designers and drafters as needed.
• Senior-level candidates may oversee the progress and quality of design work performed by other designers.
• Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, project meetings, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.

Qualifications

• 7 years of civil/structural drafting or design experience; 10 years preferred for senior-level consideration.
• Nuclear power generation experience strongly preferred.
• High school diploma, technical school, or Associate Degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Civil/Structural Technology, or related field; Bachelor’s Degree is a plus.
• Advanced proficiency with 2D and/or 3D CAD applications.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, or similar design software.
• Strong understanding of structural steel, reinforced concrete, foundations, equipment supports, and general civil/structural design principles.
• Experience developing drawings from calculations, specifications, vendor information, sketches, engineering input, and field conditions.
• Ability to interpret structural plans, sections, details, equipment drawings, calculations, and engineering specifications.
• Experience performing field walkdowns and incorporating field conditions into design documents.
• Understanding of drawing control, revision control, configuration management, and design-document quality.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple design assignments.
• Strong communication skills with engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, contractors, and project management.

• Knowledge of applicable requirements such as ACI, AISC, ASCE, AWS, NRC requirements, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B principles, and site-specific nuclear procedures is preferred depending on project scope.
