What are the responsibilities and job description for the Day-to-Day Substitute Cafeteria Assistant, District-Wide position at Food Services?
The Substitute Food Service Assistant supports the daily operations of the district’s cafeterias by helping prepare and serve meals to students and staff. This role ensures that meal service runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently in accordance with state and federal nutrition standards. Substitute Food Service Assistants play an important role in maintaining a clean, welcoming, and positive dining environment for students.
This substitute position is on an as-needed basis and is not guaranteed day-to-day work.
Key Responsibilities

Assist with meal preparation and serving in compliance with USDA and ServSafe standards.

Provide friendly, efficient service to students and staff during meal times.

Operate and clean kitchen equipment safely and correctly.

Follow established cleaning and sanitation procedures for all kitchen and dining areas.

Assist with setup and cleanup of serving lines, storage areas, and dishwashing stations.

Operate the district’s Point of Sale system as directed.

Support special events and catering as needed.

Follow all safety protocols and supervisor directives.

Demonstrate courteous, professional behavior with students, coworkers, and visitors.
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Obtain and maintain required clearances and employment trainings.

Prior food service experience preferred; school or institutional experience a plus.

Knowledge of or willingness to learn food safety and sanitation procedures.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.

Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds frequently (50 pounds occasionally).

Must demonstrate dependability, flexibility, and a service-oriented attitude.

Substitute at least one day a school year to remain on the substitute employment list.
Work Environment
This position operates in a busy school cafeteria setting. Work may involve exposure to heat, steam, and noise from kitchen equipment. Proper protective equipment and training are provided.
