Hours: Fulltime, 9:00-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday

Description:

Position Overview: Responsible for taking blood samples from all patient types for laboratory analysis using good safety techniques and infection control parameters. Responsible for verifying patient identity by Name and Date of Birth or Verbal identification prior to collection of specimens. This is a moderate stress job that requires good organization skills, problem solving and excellent communication skills, but must have the ability to change work priorities, perform several tasks at one time and meet deadlines successfully. Responsible for successful documentation of related transactions in the computer software system (Meditech Expanse).

Duties and Responsibilities

• Verifies patient identity by name and date of birth (hospital armband) or verbal identification prior to collection of specimens.
• Receives and obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients for laboratory analysis using good safety technique and infection control parameters with minimal complaints of unsuccessful phlebotomies.
• Explains their work to help relax patients or donors who feel nervous about having blood drawn.
• Successful labeling of all tubes and specimens properly with all required information.
• Adheres to medical center and departmental infection control, safety standards, and universal precautions.
• Processes specimens for testing.
• Responsible for recognizing and reporting equipment malfunction.
• Effectively and efficiently allows enough time to successfully draw all patients in the allotted amount of time desired by the Laboratory Director.
• Cleans work area as needed.
• Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program with classroom and hands-on clinical experience (e.g., 40 hours class, 100 hours practice, 100 successful venipunctures). Relevant work experience (minimum of one (1) year) may be considered in lieu of formal education.
• One (1) year relevant work experience preferred, required if no formal education or certification.

Additional Qualifications:

• Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
• Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.
• Strong computer skills.
• Good math skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all unit of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Licensure/Certification Required:

• American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Phlebotomy Technician certification preferred.
