Department: Nursing - Emergency Department

Hours: Fulltime (0.9 FTE, 72 hours per biweekly pay period) – 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. with 30-minute meal break – Schedule includes every third weekend and holiday rotation

Description:

Position Overview: The Emergency Department (ED) Technician assists with providing care to medical, trauma, and other ill patients within the Emergency Department. Must possess broad-based clinical skills including communication, mentoring, advocacy, critical thinking, accountability for self, peers, and others and assist with maintaining a healthy work environment. The Emergency Technician will also perform clerical/receptionist duties for the ED as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports patient care under the direction of Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or ED physician (MD, DO).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient care techniques and procedures and considers the needs specific to the population served.
  • Assists with direct patient care within the scope of practice
  • Cares and tasks that may be assigned include, but are not limited to:
    • Taking vital signs, EKG, and assigned tasks
    • Recording data
    • Assisting with cares and treatments as directed
    • Notification of primary nurse and/or ED provider regarding patient status changes.
    • Answer call lights promptly and assist patients with their requests. Informs nurse and provider of patient needs and action taken.
    • Checks for supply outdates.
    • Cleans and stocks patient care rooms.
    • Puts away and organizes supplies.
  • Perform receptionist duties for the department, including, but not limited to:
    • Uses excellent customer skills when conversing with patients, both face-to-face and over the phone and presents a professional image of Floyd County Medical Center.
    • Admits patients into the computer when they arrive at the ED.
    • Answer the telephone.
    • Assist with calling staff to request shift coverage when needed.
  • Provide 1:1 direct observation of patients when needed.
  • Collaborates with providers and other healthcare team members for continuity of care.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Nurse Aide course.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Computer skills, ability to navigate hospitals charting system.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Must be able to read, write, comprehend, and verbally communicate in English fluently.
  • Integrity and ability to work independently. Initiative to take on tasks without being told.

Licensure/Certification Required:

  • State of Iowa Nurse Aide Registry listing required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Mandatory Abuse Reporter Certification required within 6 months of hire.
