Hours: Fulltime (1.0 FTE) – M-F Day Shift

Description:

Position Overview: Performs any combination of duties to assist in examination and treatment of patients including the adult, geriatric, and pediatric population. Performs clerical/secretarial duties. Assists with minor procedures dictated by established clinical protocol. Documents information as needed in a timely manner.

Patient Care/Examination/Treatment:

• Performs routine skills or treatments in a manner that provides for patient comfort and protects the patient’s dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
• Performs tasks and technical skills as delegated in accordance with established policies and procedures for adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients.
• Provides competent patient care to the above-indicated patient population.
• Prepares patients for tests and procedures.
• Assist with minor procedures.
• Assists patients in a manner to:
  • Utilize correct body mechanics.
  • Safely perform transfer techniques.
  • Safely assist a patient.
• Performs frequent hand washing.
• Performs and records temperature (oral, axillary), pulse, respiration and blood pressure when indicated.
• Weighs the patient (standing) and record when indicated.
• Assists the patient to dress as indicated.
• Performs and/or assists the physician with dressing changes.
• Drapes patients with covering for examination/treatment.
• Assists the physician during examination and treatment of patients.
• Removes staples and sutures.
• Interviews patients and obtains patient medical history.
• Educates and advises patients on specific medical issues and to provide instruction on proper care and treatment.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to sterile technique.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to standard precautions.
• Assists with applying and removing casts.
• Applies braces and splints as directed.
• Schedules procedures and tests as ordered by physician.
• Explains Pre-admission testing (PAT) educational information as needed.
• Confirms clearance for procedures and tests as needed.

Equipment/Supplies:

• Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to equipment and supplies.
• Assists in the assembling of equipment and supplies in preparation for examinations and various treatments or procedures to be performed.
• Properly cleans and disinfects instruments/equipment.
• Tests, prepares, and disposes of instrument cleaning solution.
• Correctly sets up the clinic area and prepare treatment rooms for examination/treatment of patients.
• Properly prepares containers for pathology specimens.
• Hands instruments and materials to physician when indicated.

Communications:

• Records and communicates patient information in an accurate and timely manner.
• Completes necessary forms, requisitions, and communications in an accurate and timely manner.
• Demonstrates telephone courtesy.
• Schedules patient appointments with other departments, other hospital staff, and maintains calendars.
• Coordinates surgeon activities/schedules with other hospitals.
• Act as a receptionist, greets patients.
• Answers telephones; receives and delivers messages.
• Provides information and direction, in accordance with HIPAA standards, to hospital staff, other departments, ancillary services and other hospitals.
  • Receives messages and directs and/or notifies the appropriate hospital staff or department.
  • Communicates patient information to the appropriate hospital staff or department in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Transmits reports or requests to the appropriate hospital staff or department.
  • Promptly sends messages to other hospital staff or departments.
• Interviews and reviews patients for financial status as appropriate.
  • Contacts health insurance agencies for procedure approval.
  • Documents approval or non-approval on the patient’s record.

Patient Charts:

• Assembles and maintains patient charts.
• Assures proper identification of individual pages in the patient charts.
• Adds additional chart forms to the patient charts as indicated.
• Records pertinent information and data on the patient charts (i.e., vital signs, health history, medications, etc.).
• Prepares patient chart copies when indicated and distribute to the appropriate hospital staff or department.
• Ensures proper chart disposition with Medical Records.
• Requests patient records from Medical Records when indicated.
• Records pertinent patient information on patient’s chart.
• Charts and documents in a variety of computer systems.

Miscellaneous:

• Assists in the care of the environment and equipment to ensure patient and staff safety.
• Collects and bags soiled linen; transports filled linen bags to the central laundry room.
• Inventories, orders, and puts away medicines, supplies, materials, and equipment for the clinical area.
• Coordinates routine office activities and administrative functions.
• Properly records information in logbooks.
• Completes charge sheets.
• Maintains a clean, neat environment in the clinical rooms and work area.
• Completes work orders for the repair of equipment and/or other problems.
• Monitors expiration dates of medicines, supplies, and equipment monthly. Removes outdated items from service and replaces. Documents monthly monitoring.
• Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program or medical assistant program.
• Minimum one-year experience in an orthopedic clinical setting required.

Licensure/Certification Required:

• American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential or current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Iowa. Other CMA credentials will be considered.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) – BLS is not required for staff with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
