About the Opportunity: Are you passionate about transportation safety, data analysis, and public service? Join our team as a Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Data Intern and contribute to making our region safer and more accessible. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work physically in-office with a dynamic organization focused on regional transportation planning, policy, and safety. The primary responsibility of this role is to review and code crash records into the Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Analysis Tool (PBCAT). You’ll gain hands-on experience in transportation data analysis and also have the chance to participate in broader MPO planning activities.

Anticipated Duration: January 2026 through August 2026 | Part-Time, approximately 15–20 hours/week

Key Responsibilities

  • Review police crash reports involving pedestrians and bicyclists from the statewide crash database.
  • Accurately code crash data into the Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Analysis Tool (PBCAT).
  • Assist with data quality checks and trend analysis related to crash data.
  • Participate in roadway safety audits and site visits as part of our regional safety initiatives.
  • Support planning activities, including research, mapping, and data visualization.
  • Attend and engage in meetings with local and state transportation partners.
  • Assist in preparing presentations, reports, or materials for stakeholders, including elected officials.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a college/university program or recent graduate (e.g., Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Geography, Data Science, or a related field).
  • Interest in transportation safety, active transportation, and public service.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, GIS, or other data tools is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information professionally and confidentially.

What You’ll Gain

  • Real-world experience in transportation planning and public-sector data analysis.
  • Exposure to local and state transportation planning and safety efforts.
  • Opportunities to interact with professional planners, engineers, and public officials.
  • A stronger understanding of the policymaking and planning process at the regional level.
  • Professional development in a supportive and mission-driven environment.

Physical Requirements: The work environment for this internship is an office setting with some in-field activities. Most duties are performed sitting at a desk or table. This position must be able to:

  • Remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Respond quickly to sounds and visual cues and respond to dangerous situations.
  • Lift and carry, or otherwise move, 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
  • Wear personal protective gear correctly as situation requires.
  • Work occasionally in non-hazardous outdoor weather conditions.

Compensation: The part-time internship offers competitive pay ($18 / hour) and paid parking and/or transit reimbursement. MetroPlan Orlando is based in beautiful downtown Orlando, with convenient access to the Church Street SunRail Station, nearby Lymmo service, a LYNX bus stop at the front door, and secure bicycle and vehicle parking. Interns are required to commute and work physically in office. Internship is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and is anticipated to conclude in August 2026, although exact dates will be determined when a person is selected for the position.

Interns are not entitled to benefits such as paid holidays, paid sick leave, paid vacations, paid personal days, paid insurance coverage, pension eligibility, unemployment, or other applicable benefits afforded regular MetroPlan Orlando employees.
