Position Summary:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing core accounting functions with a strong emphasis on job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and construction accounting practices. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, supports project profitability analysis, and maintains compliance with multi-state tax regulations relevant to flooring and construction operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Close
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Lead the month-end and year-end close process
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts
- Analyze financial results and provide variance explanations
Job Costing & WIP
- Maintain accurate job cost tracking (labor, materials, subcontractors)
- Prepare and review WIP schedules, including over/under billings
- Partner with project managers to ensure accurate cost forecasting
- Monitor job profitability and identify cost overruns
Revenue Recognition
- Apply percentage-of-completion (POC) accounting methods
- Ensure proper revenue and cost recognition in accordance with GAAP
- Review contract terms for appropriate accounting treatment
Accounts & Operational Support
- Oversee billing, AIA pay applications, and retainage tracking
- Support accounts payable and receivable functions as needed
- Ensure proper coding of expenses to jobs and cost categories
Tax & Compliance
- Assist with multi-state sales/use tax compliance, especially for material vs. labor taxability
- Support preparation of tax filings and audits
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and company policies
Audit & Internal Controls
- Assist with external audits and financial reviews
- Maintain documentation and support audit requests
- Recommend and implement process improvements
Systems & Process Improvement
- Utilize and improve accounting systems (e.g., ERP, job cost systems)
- Develop reporting tools for project and executive teams
- Streamline workflows to increase accuracy and efficiency
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred)
- 5 years of accounting experience, construction or contractor experience strongly preferred
- Experience with job costing and WIP schedules required
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Experience with construction/accounting software
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis)
Knowledge Areas (Preferred)
- Commercial flooring or subcontractor accounting
- Multi-state sales and use tax rules
- Union payroll and certified payroll reporting
