Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Controls Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and integration of electrical systems for data center power infrastructure, including medium and low voltage switchgear, automatic transfer systems, power monitoring, and control systems. This role will focus on developing control architectures that support high-reliability power distribution systems, including integration with SCADA, BMS, EPMS, and power monitoring systems used in hyperscale and enterprise data centers.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Controls Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and integration of electrical systems for data center power infrastructure, including medium and low voltage switchgear, automatic transfer systems, power monitoring, and control systems. This role will focus on developing control architectures that support high-reliability power distribution systems, including integration with SCADA, BMS, EPMS, and power monitoring systems used in hyperscale and enterprise data centers.
What a typical day looks like:
- Design control systems for medium-voltage and low-voltage switchgear assemblies, including monitoring, interlocks, and automation functions.
- Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts using tools such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.
- Design control architectures for generator paralleling, automatic transfer schemes, and load management systems.
- Develop control narratives and functional descriptions for power distribution systems.
- Create and maintain Bill of Materials (BOM) for control systems and electrical panels.
- Develop PLC or relay logic for control and monitoring of power distribution systems.
- Integrate switchgear with EPMS (Electrical Power Monitoring Systems) and BMS platforms used in data centers.
- Maintain detailed electrical documentation including: schematics, control narratives, wiring diagrams.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable standards such as: NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 70E, NFPA 99, UL 891 / UL 1558 switchgear standards, IEEE power system guidelines.
- Collaborates with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and commissioning teams to ensure designs meet reliability, safety, and redundancy requirements typical of mission-critical environments
- Perform other related duties as assigned,
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering required.
- At least 4 years of relevant work experience in electrical controls design, switchgear, or power distribution.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent budgeting and cost containment skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work well in a cross-functional team environment
- Strong knowledge of standard electrical testing and measuring equipment.
- Knowledge of Electrical Safety Procedures, NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI Codes.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD or related software.
