What are the responsibilities and job description for the Residential Energy Auditor / Home Performance Specialist position at FIXED HOME HANDYMAN SERVICES?
Residential Energy Auditor / Home Performance Specialist
FIXED Home Handyman Services
Erie, Pennsylvania — Serving Erie, Crawford and Mercer Counties
Pay: $20.00–$25.00 per hour, based on experience, knowledge and certifications
Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
A Different Kind of Field Position
Part investigator, part problem-solver and part technical guide—the Energy Auditor figures out what a home needs and sets the weatherization crew up to complete the work successfully.
FIXED Home Handyman Services is looking for someone who wants more than a list of appointments. We need a dependable, curious and teachable person who will take ownership of the auditing process, work closely with our crews and office, and help us continue building our energy-services operation.
Direct energy-auditing experience is preferred, but it is not required for the right candidate. A strong background in residential construction, HVAC, weatherization, maintenance, inspections, remodeling or home repair may provide the foundation needed to succeed.
We can teach our procedures, software, program requirements and auditing workflow. We are looking for someone who understands homes, enjoys investigating problems, follows directions, completes what they start and wants to help grow a company.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct residential energy and weatherization assessments throughout Erie, Crawford and Mercer Counties.
- Investigate the home to identify eligible weatherization, energy-efficiency and health-and-safety measures.
- Inspect and document insulation, air-infiltration points, mechanical systems, venting, doors, windows, attics, crawl spaces and other relevant conditions.
- Take accurate measurements and determine the quantities, time and work needed.
- Perform applicable gas-leak detection, flue-gas carbon-monoxide testing, draft and spillage testing, CAZ testing and blower-door diagnostics.
- Capture clear photographs and field information.
- Complete required customer forms, signatures, energy education and program documentation informatively, politely and respectfully.
- Turn field findings into an accurate, practical and crew-ready scope of work.
- Schedule the weatherization work and collaborate with crew leaders when questions, changes or unexpected conditions arise.
- Document no-shows, deferrals, customer follow-up and job progress.
- Review completed job jackets before they are released for billing.
- Identify additional customer needs and help improve the department’s forms, technology, documentation and workflow.
When the audit schedule is lighter, this position remains involved by completing audit write-ups, reviewing job jackets, following up with customers, assisting the weatherization crew, participating in training and helping improve department systems.
What We Need From You
- Practical familiarity with residential homes through construction, HVAC, weatherization, maintenance, inspection, handyman, remodeling or related experience.
- Curiosity and an investigative approach to understanding how homes and building systems work.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to complete all required paperwork, photographs, measurements and signatures.
- Ability to follow established procedures, checklists, training and management direction.
- Willingness to ask questions instead of guessing.
- Ability to retain training, apply feedback and improve.
- Dependability and follow-through without repeated reminders.
- Professional communication with homeowners, coworkers and management.
- Comfort using an iPad or laptop, cell phone, email, electronic forms and digital photographs.
- Basic math skills for measurements, quantities, areas and job-duration estimates.
- Ability to work independently while remaining communicative and accountable.
- Interest in helping FIXED strengthen and grow its energy-services operation.
No specific college degree is required. We will consider practical experience, residential knowledge, certifications, training and demonstrated ability together.
Preferred Experience
Any of the following would be valuable, but a candidate does not need to have everything listed:
- Energy auditing, weatherization, home performance or residential inspection
- HVAC, construction, maintenance, remodeling or home repair
- Building science, insulation, air sealing, ventilation or combustion safety
- Blower-door operation or pressure diagnostics
- Combustion analyzers, gas detectors, draft testing, spillage testing or CAZ testing
- Residential work-order development or job scoping
- Digital field documentation and photographic checklists
- Training, mentoring or technical support
- BPI, HEP, WAP, OSHA, lead-safe or related industry credentials
- Pennsylvania College of Technology or comparable energy-related training
Relevant experience and current certifications will be considered when determining starting pay within the advertised range.
Physical Requirements
This is an active field position. The employee must be able to:
- Enter and inspect basements, attics, crawl spaces and unfinished areas.
- Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb and use ladders.
- Safely carry and use basic tools, testing equipment and audit materials.
- Work around dust, insulation, seasonal temperatures, household pets and typical residential conditions.
- Recognize unsafe or unsanitary conditions and leave when necessary.
As the Department Grows
For the right person, FIXED may support additional training and certification development based on experience, performance, business needs and long-term potential.
This position may have opportunities to:
- Train and support additional auditors
- Work with energy-auditing programs beyond our current National Fuel Gas work
- Help improve auditing, documentation and purchasing systems
- Take on additional technical leadership within weatherization and home performance
