General Summary: The Safety Specialist ensures our FiveStar stores, Stone Creek Farm, Cyrus Transport, Distribution Center, and corporate offices remain compliant with laws, regulations, and policies regarding safety through onsite inspections and observing work practices. They also investigate incidents and analyze incident reporting data to suggest proactive improvements to policies and processes in an effort to keep employees and customers safe, mitigate potential general liability exposures, and control the Worker’s Compensation mod rating.

General Summary: The Safety Specialist ensures our FiveStar stores, Stone Creek Farm, Cyrus Transport, Distribution Center, and corporate offices remain compliant with laws, regulations, and policies regarding safety through onsite inspections and observing work practices. They also investigate incidents and analyze incident reporting data to suggest proactive improvements to policies and processes in an effort to keep employees and customers safe, mitigate potential general liability exposures, and control the Worker’s Compensation mod rating.
Essential Job Duties
- Perform onsite inspections to evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure safety.
- Investigate adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting, or other conditions that could affect employee health, comfort, or performance.
- Ensure the presence of fire prevention, safety, and/or first-aid equipment.
- Perform onsite investigations following incidents to identify root cause(s) and suggest preventive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
- Analyze incident report data and identify trends, proactively recommending changes to department leads to reduce future incidents.
- Exercise “Stop-Work Authority” when an activity poses a threat to health or safety.
- Keep up to date in current industry trends and recommend new measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
- Ensure OSHA and HAZMAT compliance and training at all locations.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Plan and conduct health and safety training or equipment demonstrations as needed for specific populations of employees.
- Develop and/or maintain training materials, reference guides, policies, and procedures related to safety, including emergency response plans.
- Bachelor’s degree in risk management or similar field with 3 or more years’ experience.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Well organized with attention to detail and able to meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify issues and problem solve.
- Professional appearance and positive attitude.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
