What are the responsibilities and job description for the FSU Undergraduate Student Employment Peer Mentor position at Fitchburg State University?
Peer Mentors are responsible for providing both academic and social support to new students. Peer
Mentors will be chosen based on their ability to be good academic role models, highly communicative
and social, high energy, sensitive, compassionate, trustworthy, mature, and reliable.
The Peer Mentor's mandatory duties for the fall semester include:
- Attend up to 16 hours of mentor training and meetings.
- Hold regular hours for 1:1 appointments with students to provide direct, guided support on specific study skills
- Attend bi-weekly Mentor Meetings with ACT Center Staff throughout the fall semester.
- Attend an individual mid-term meeting with ACT Center Staff.
- Reach out (via email, text, in-person) to each student in the FYE class (about 20 total students per FYE section) on a weekly basis.
- Participate in at least two discussion panels or workshop events during the semester.
- Be up to date with campus deadlines (course registration, add/drop, withdraw, etc.) and remind students of these dates as needed. Be knowledgeable of other offices/services on campus to share information or refer freshmen to these services as needed throughout the semester.
- Stay up to date with all required documentation/paperwork as required by ACT Center staff.
- Be communicative with ACT Center staff and respond to emails and phone calls with ACTCenter staff and faculty within 24 hours.
Additional duties may vary, including:
- Present short (10 - 15 minute), just-in-time resources to FYE classes upon faculty request.
- Staff study hall hours for student athletes or residential learning communities.
Job Requirements:
Minimum qualifications include:
- Must have a GPA of 2.5 or greater and be full-time undergraduate students.
- Must be endorsed by 2 faculty or staff members.
- Must be free of disciplinary issues.
- Must commit to 4 hours of work per week and be able to attend bi-weekly meetings.
Additional Information:
Shift Information: This is a part-time, non-benefited, student only position. Shift will vary based on student schedules up to 20 hours per week at $15 per hour.
