Our client, a well-established environmental nonprofit, is seeking a Director of Finance to serve as a strategic partner to executive leadership while overseeing the organization's financial health, operational infrastructure, and long-term sustainability.

This is much more than a traditional accounting position. You'll sit on the leadership team, collaborate closely with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees, and help shape the financial strategy that supports an important mission.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Financial Leadership

  • Direct all accounting and financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and monthly and annual close.
  • Prepare accurate financial statements, board reports, forecasts, and performance analyses that support informed decision-making.
  • Monitor organizational cash flow, investments, and financial resources to ensure long-term stability.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Develop and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial processes to improve efficiency and reduce risk.
  • Lead the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, banks, investment advisors, and financial partners.
  • Oversee regulatory compliance, including IRS Form 990 preparation, charitable registrations, tax filings, and other federal and state reporting requirements.

Budgeting, Grants & Strategic Planning

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with department leaders and provide ongoing forecasting throughout the year.
  • Monitor grant expenditures, reimbursement requests, and financial reporting while ensuring compliance with grant requirements and restricted funding.
  • Support leadership with financial modeling, strategic planning, and organizational decision-making.
  • Partner with the Finance Committee and Board by preparing reports and presenting key financial updates.

Operations & Administrative Oversight

  • Provide leadership for finance while supervising accounting, HR, and IT personnel.
  • Oversee insurance programs, contract administration, document retention, cybersecurity awareness, and organizational risk management.
  • Support technology planning, software implementation, and operational improvements across the organization.
  • Assist with HR initiatives including employee benefits administration, compensation planning, payroll compliance, performance management, and professional development.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Seven or more years of progressive nonprofit accounting and finance leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP accounting, financial reporting, grant accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and fund accounting.
  • Experience leading audits, managing internal controls, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to mentor staff and collaborate across departments.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • A genuine appreciation for organizations that make a positive impact in their communities.
