ABOUT: FirstPres Church of Hayward (FPCH) is a historic congregation and missional community striving to love our world well. Guided by our core beliefs and a commitment to anti-racist practices, we seek to fulfill our mission by serving our community through our four areas of ministry: Community Outreach (homeless shelters, food pantry, Recovery Cafe, and more), Church Life (congregational ministry engagement), HGG Childcare Center, and The Chabot Theater.

DESCRIPTION: The responsibilities of this position are to be conducted under the supervision of the HGG Executive Director. The Teacher will be employed as a member of the center staff. The teacher will be accountable for the implementation of policy and fulfillment of responsibilities described herein.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successfully obtained a Department of Justice clearance
  • Have training and experience commensurate with the responsibilities of this position, including a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least twelve semester college units which should include courses in Child, Growth, and Development; Child, Family and Community; and Program/Curriculum. This course work and training includes, family-centered practice, typical development and common health problems, IDEA and other applicable laws, children’s and families’ rights under these laws, roles and responsibilities related to the IEP/IFSP, strategies for supporting inclusion, strategies for modifying and adapting curriculum, schedules, materials, and instruction to meet individual needs, the referral and assessment process and community supports and resources.
  • A minimum of one-year supervised teaching experience in a licensed childcare center
  • Associate Teacher permit is preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Willingness to continue professional development

SPECIFIC TASKS

  • Treats all children, their families, and employees of the Center with dignity and respect.
  • Plans, supervises, and implements the classroom program in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the school and the developmental needs of the children.
  • Conducts a daily health check of each child on arrival.
  • Assesses the children’s learning needs as directed by Head Teacher and in conformity with Center policy, by writing daily anecdotal observations on the children’s development as directed by Head Teacher.
  • Gears the program to the needs of the individual child.
  • Consider the individual child in relation to his/her cultural and social-economic background, helping each to understand his or her value in the group.
  • Provides experiences for the children that builds self-esteem.
  • Provides activities, which encourage self-reliance.
  • Helps each child to function cooperatively in a group.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents and communicates necessary information in a professional manner.
  • Maintains a cheerful, loving demeanor.
  • Carry out classroom curriculum following developmentally appropriate practices as outlined by NAEYC and in conformity with the Center’s policies.
  • Maintain and implement lesson plans as directed by the Head Teacher.
  • Uses materials and equipment in an economical and respectful manner.
  • Keeps the room environment interesting, stimulating, safe, orderly, and clean.
  • Reports needed maintenance and safety concerns to the Head Teachers.
  • Attends parent meetings and special events as directed.
  • Works designated hours – until the last child is picked up, as necessary.
  • Attends all staff meetings.
  • Participates in offered training programs, conferences, courses, and other professional opportunities.
  • Releases children to authorized persons only.
  • Cheerfully performs extra duties requested by the Head Teacher or Director.
  • Performs general housekeeping tasks to maintain a safe and tidy environment.
  • Does not discuss a child’s negative behavior with parents but refers all questions to the Head Teacher.
  • Temporarily assumes Assistant Head Teacher responsibilities and position when assigned by Head Teacher or Director.
  • Maintains personal cleanliness, including washing hands after using the toilet, toileting or diapering a child, wiping noses handling pets and before preparing and/or serving lunches and snacks, or diapering a second child.
  • Performs additional duties and functions as assigned.

THE PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit at a child-sized table, use hands to handle materials, speak to communicate, observe children, and require ordinary hearing ability. The employee is regularly required to bend at the waist, stoop, and crouch, stand for prolonged periods of time and walk. The employee is regularly required to push, pull, lift and/or carry children and classroom materials forty-five pounds or heavier.

Incumbents may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids and standard cleaning chemicals.

Pay: $21.00 - $22.00 per hour
