Job Overview First Presbyterian Church, located in the heart of Bennettsville, SC, is seeking a passionate and dedicated Part-time Organist and adult Chancel Choir Director to join our outstanding ministry team and enrich our multi-generational worship services through inspiring music and leadership. Duties
- Collaborate closely with clergy to select music that aligns with liturgical themes and enhances worship
- Play a 1974 Schantz pipe organ with 2-manual (2M) and 28-stop (28S) configuration (2M/28S) and a 1913 restored Everett grand piano during weekly worship services, special events, and ceremonies, ensuring musical excellence and appropriate repertoire
- Lead, coordinate, and rehearse the Chancel choir to prepare for weekly services and seasonal events
- Develop engaging choral programs that enhance the spiritual atmosphere of the church and encourage active participation
- Conduct a three-octave experienced, adult handbell choir (optional, with additional compensation)
- Accompany the children’s Kingdom Club choir and soloists in rehearsal and worship
- Provide mentorship and guidance to all choir members, fostering their musical growth and confidence
- Recruit new choir members and maintain a welcoming environment for all participants
- Oversee the maintenance and tuning of all organs, pianos, and related equipment to ensure readiness for performances
- Effectively manage the overall music budget and music library
- Secure replacement leadership when absent
Requirements
- Skilled musician with strong pipe organ and choral conducting experience
- Demonstrated ability to instruct adult vocal (and handbell) choir members effectively
- Willingness to play for funerals and weddings (with additional compensation)
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with clergy, staff, choir members, and congregation members
- Leadership qualities that inspire teamwork, dedication, and a shared passion for music ministry
- Ability to mentor choir members by providing constructive feedback and fostering a positive rehearsal environment
- Knowledge of traditional liturgical music traditions is preferred
- Flexibility to accommodate rehearsal schedules, special services, holidays, and community events
