First Midwest Group is looking to add a high-impact HR & Payroll Specialist to our team. This is a unique opportunity to step into a broad, hands-on HR role supporting 200 employees across multiple businesses, including hospitality, senior living, self-storage, and more.
You’ll be joining a lean, two-person HR team, where your work will directly influence operations, employee experience, and organizational success.
About the Role
This role is a blend of payroll, benefits administration, and recruiting, with a strong focus on execution, follow-through, and building strong relationships across our businesses.
We are also entering an exciting phase with a renewed focus on company culture, engagement, and consistency across all entities—and this role will play a key part in supporting that effort.
What You’ll Do
Payroll (Core Function)
- Process and manage payroll across multiple entities
- Audit timecards, PTO, and ensure accuracy and compliance
- Track and enter employee changes (hires, terminations, pay changes)
- Manage garnishments, deductions, and payroll reporting
Benefits & Employee Support
- Serve as the primary contact for benefits enrollment and employee questions
- Manage onboarding benefits setup and eligibility
- Coordinate open enrollment and vendor communication
- Review and approve benefit-related invoices for payment
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Manage job postings on Indeed, LinkedIn, and other platforms
- Source and screen candidates, conduct phone interviews
- Coordinate interviews with hiring managers
- Facilitate pre-employment processes (background checks, E-Verify, onboarding)
HR Operations
- Track and manage time-off requests and reporting
- Maintain employee records and HR systems
- Assist with compliance reporting and audits (EEO, ACA, etc.)
- Partner with leadership and managers across all business units
What We’re Looking For
- 3–5 years of experience in HR, payroll, or a related role
- Strong attention to detail—especially in payroll and data accuracy
- Experience with benefits administration and HR systems
- Comfort managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow through
