Position Title: Director of Children’s Ministry
Type of Position: Part-Time (20-25 hours/week)
Supervisor: Senior Pastor
About Children's Ministry at FFUMC:
First Farragut UMC is a growing congregation in West Knox county. We are a mission-oriented church that currently averages 130 worshippers on Sunday mornings. A typical Sunday morning in the Children's Ministry area includes a Sunday School hour (called Kids Grow) and a worship hour (excluding first Sundays). We average between 12-18 children on Sunday mornings with many more children engaged via community outreach events.
Position Summary:
The Director of Children’s Ministry (DCM) provides Christian leadership and oversight for children (birth through 5th grade) and their families by planning, implementing, and supervising all aspects of FFUMC’s children’s ministries. The DCM works in partnership with staff and families to create a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment that fosters spiritual growth and equips families to lead faith formation in the home.
Key Responsibilities:
Children’s Ministry Leadership
- Develop, organize, and lead ministry programs for children (birth–5th grade), including Sunday mornings, seasonal events (e.g., Advent, Lent, Easter, VBS), and occasional midweek or special programming.
- Ensure that all programming aligns with FFUMC’s mission and values, fostering faith, fun, and a sense of belonging.
Volunteer Recruitment & Training
- Recruit, train, schedule, and support volunteers for Sunday school, nursery, special events, and other children’s programming.
- Encourage and equip parents and guardians to engage in their children's faith development.
Nursery & Childcare Staff Oversight
- Hire, train, and supervise paid nursery/childcare workers in accordance with church policy and Safe Sanctuaries.
- Monitor nursery workers and volunteers duties, certifications, training requirements, and performance.
- Approve time sheets and submit them to the Financial Administrator in a timely manner.
Program Administration & Communication
- Maintain accurate rosters, schedules, and communication lists for children’s ministry.
- Communicate regularly with families, volunteers, and staff using email, social media, flyers, and announcements.
- Collaborate with other church staff to ensure cohesive planning and integration of children’s ministry into the broader life of the church.
Financial and Resource Management
- Manage the children’s ministry budget and submit expenses in collaboration with the Finance Committee.
- Maintain and organize supplies, materials, and classrooms.
Safe Sanctuaries and Safety Oversight
- Maintain and implement FFUMC’s Safe Sanctuaries Policy, ensuring all staff and volunteers are trained and compliant.
- Prioritize creating a physically, emotionally, and spiritually safe environment for all children and volunteers.
Partnership with Trinity Learning Center Preschool
- Serve as liaison between FFUMC and Trinity Learning Center to coordinate shared space use and schedule a monthly chapel experience.
Presence & Participation
- Be present on Sunday mornings and at other times when childcare is provided for church events.
- Attend worship and other church services/events as duties allow.
- Represent children’s ministry in church meetings and collaborate with other ministry teams and staff as appropriate.
Other Duties
- Arrange for qualified substitutes when unable to attend scheduled events.
- Perform other ministry-related tasks as requested, in the spirit of teamwork and Christian service.
Qualifications:
- A professing Christian committed to the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ.
- High school diploma required; relevant college coursework or experience in early childhood education, children’s ministry, or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience working with children and parents in a church or educational setting is desirable.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Able to manage time well, lead a team, and adapt creatively to challenges.
- CPR certification for infants and children (training provided if needed).
- Completion of a criminal background check and Safe Sanctuaries training is required.
- A 90-day probationary period will apply at the beginning of employment.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to move between two levels of the church facility (via indoor stairs or outdoor pathway; no elevator available).
- Must be able to lift and carry supplies or assist children (up to 35 lbs) as needed.
Supervision and Accountability:
The Children’s Ministry Coordinator reports directly to the Senior Pastor and is accountable to the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). The DCM supervises nursery and childcare workers and works collaboratively with the pastor, church staff, and volunteers.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $20,000.00 - $23,000.00 per year
