Secondary Mortgage Underwriter

Role:

Evaluates mortgage loan applications to determine applicant's creditworthiness, income stability, and ability to repay the loan. Review and analyze financial documents, including income statements, tax returns, bank statements, and credit reports to assess the applicant's financial status. Adherence to agency lending guidelines, with a strong analytical, detail oriented and sound ability to make judgements in accordance with regulatory requirements and investor and company policies.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Evaluates mortgage loan applications to determine applicant’s creditworthiness, income stability, and ability to repay the loan.

Review and analyze financial documents, including income statements, tax returns, bank statements, and credit reports to assess the applicant’s financial status.

Verify the accuracy and completeness of loan documentation and ensure compliance with lending regulations and agency, investor, and company policies.

Assess property appraisals and conduct risk assessments to determine the loan-to-value ratio and overall risk associated with the mortgage.

E 10%

Communicate with loan officers, processors, and other relevant parties to gather additional information or clarify discrepancies in loan applications.

Make informed decisions on loan approvals, denials or conditional approvals based on established criteria and risk assessment.

E 10%

Stay up to date on changes in lending regulations, underwriting guidelines of agency and investor, and industry best practices to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.

Collaborate with other departments as needed to resolve complex issues and ensure regulatory compliance.

Maintain pipeline management of a combination of up to 3 new file reviews as well as resubmission reviews and adverse request reviews.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Performance Measurements:

1. To ensure the Bank and governmental standards are met at all times ensuring accuracy on all documents with zero errors; maintain good working knowledge of Bank and government standards through continued research.

2. To maintain a professional, courteous, and friendly atmosphere for all customers.

3. Work independently with minimal supervision.

4. Ability to respond to questions and defend underwriting decisions in a professional and productive manner.

5. To ensure files are closed in no more than 30 days from receipt.

Knowledge and Skills:

Experience

Three years to five years of similar or related experience.

Education

(1) A two-year college degree, or (2) completion of a specialized certification or licensing, or (3) completion of specialized training courses conducted by vendors, or (4) job-specific skills acquired through an apprenticeship program.

Interpersonal Skills

Ability to function independently and prioritize tasks in a fast paced, high stress environment. Ability to work well with many diverse personalities.

FHA DE and VA SARS Certification required
Thorough knowledge and understanding of guidelines for all Non-QM and Agency (FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, VA, USDA).
Thorough knowledge and understanding of Encompass LOS system is preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements

The person in this position needs to frequently move about inside the office to interact with associates or clients and access office machinery and file cabinets. The person in the position constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, photocopier, and printer.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as calculators, computers, phones, photocopier, filing cabinets and fax machines.
