Textiles Instructor
Primary Purpose
The Textiles Instructor is responsible for planning and delivering engaging, age-appropriate instruction in sewing, crochet, amigurumi, and other textile arts for students ages 9 through high school. The instructor will foster creativity, confidence, problem-solving skills, and technical proficiency while creating a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports the mission and values of the Fine Arts Association.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and implement creative and educational curriculum in sewing, crochet, amigurumi, and other textile arts for students ages 9 through high school.

Teach foundational and advanced techniques, including hand sewing, machine sewing, crochet stitches, pattern reading, project construction, and amigurumi creation.

Demonstrate proper use and care of sewing machines, crochet tools, needles, and other equipment and supplies.

Adapt projects and instructional methods to meet the developmental needs, interests, and skill levels of individual students.

Foster a supportive classroom environment that encourages creativity, patience, perseverance, and self-expression.

Provide individualized instruction, guidance, and constructive feedback to help students build confidence and develop their artistic and technical skills.

Prepare lesson plans, organize materials, and maintain a clean, safe, and well-equipped classroom environment.

Supervise students during classes, workshops, camps, exhibitions, and special events to ensure safety and appropriate behavior.

Monitor the safe use of sewing machines, scissors, needles, pins, and other textile arts tools.

Maintain inventory of supplies and communicate material needs to appropriate staff members.

Assist with the planning and presentation of student projects for exhibitions, showcases, and community events.

Maintain attendance records and other documentation as required by the Fine Arts Association.

Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities as requested.

Support the mission, values, policies, and procedures of the Fine Arts Association.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

High school diploma required; post-secondary education in textile arts, fashion design, art education, family and consumer sciences, or a related field preferred.

Previous experience teaching sewing, crochet, fiber arts, or related subjects to children and adolescents preferred.

Demonstrated proficiency in hand sewing, machine sewing, crochet, and amigurumi techniques.

Ability to read and interpret patterns and teach pattern construction concepts appropriate to varying skill levels.

Experience working with students ages 9 through high school in an educational, recreational, or community setting preferred.

Strong classroom management, organizational, and communication skills.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, and move for extended periods during classes and events.

Ability to lift, carry, and set up sewing machines, supplies, and equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.

Manual dexterity sufficient to demonstrate sewing, crochet, and amigurumi techniques and operate sewing equipment safely.

Visual acuity sufficient to thread needles, read patterns, inspect projects, and monitor student safety.

Ability to engage in physical activity consistent with instructional activities.

Work is performed in classroom, studio, and community-based settings.

Exposure to moderate noise levels associated with sewing machines and group activities.
