What are the responsibilities and job description for the Application Scientist position at Filtrous?
Application Scientist - Job Description (Full-Time)
Position Overview:
As an Application Scientist, you will develop and validate practical applications for molecular biology reagents, antibodies, cell culture systems, diagnostic panels, and analytical instruments while creating technical content that drives customer success and marketing initiatives. This role is ideal for someone who combines hands-on laboratory expertise across molecular biology, cell culture (including stem cell applications), immunoassays, and analytical chemistry with strong scientific communication skills, transforming complex product capabilities into compelling application notes, white papers, and technical resources. You'll work at the intersection of R&D and customer support, demonstrating how Filtrous's solutions solve real-world challenges in clinical diagnostics, cell-based assays, molecular testing, and life science research—from basic cell culture workflows to advanced stem cell applications and antibody-based detection methods. Your technical documentation and field support will empower both our sales team and end-users to maximize the value of our expanding portfolio across molecular, cellular, and analytical platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
Application Development & Method Optimization
- Develop and validate new analytical methods on HPLC, LCMS, GCMS, ICP-MS, and other analytical instruments, as well as cell-based assays and molecular biology platforms for diverse customer applications.
- Design and execute application workflows demonstrating optimal use of molecular biology reagents, antibodies, cell culture products (including stem cell media and supplements), diagnostic panels, and analytical instruments across clinical, research, and bioprocessing environments.
- Create robust protocols for complex applications including cell culture maintenance, stem cell differentiation, antibody-based detection, molecular assays, and analytical method development.
- Perform method verification and compatibility testing across molecular, cellular, and analytical platforms to ensure products meet real-world laboratory requirements and regulatory specifications.
Customer Validation & Field Support
- Travel to customer sites to validate molecular assays, cell culture protocols, antibody applications, and analytical methods, supporting new assay development and ensuring successful implementation of Filtrous products.
- Provide on-site technical support for method development and troubleshooting across diverse platforms including cell culture systems, flow cytometry, immunoassays, qPCR, and analytical instruments.
- Conduct customer training sessions covering cell culture techniques, stem cell applications, antibody optimization, molecular assay development, and analytical method validation.
- Partner with customers to develop customized solutions ranging from specialized cell culture conditions and antibody panels to molecular assays and analytical methods tailored to their specific research or diagnostic needs.
Content Creation & Marketing Support
- Author technical content including application notes, white papers, and method guides showcasing cell culture protocols, antibody applications, molecular assay performance, and analytical instrument methods.
- Develop comprehensive application packages including cell culture SOPs, antibody validation data, molecular assay protocols, and analytical method parameters for HPLC, LCMS, GCMS, and ICP-MS.
- Create compelling data packages demonstrating product performance across cellular, molecular, and analytical applications, including stem cell differentiation studies and multiplex immunoassays.
- Transform complex scientific data from cell biology, molecular diagnostics, and analytical chemistry into accessible content for both specialists and broader audiences.
Cross-functional Partnership
- Collaborate with R&D to ensure new products are compatible with major cell culture systems, molecular biology platforms, and analytical instrumentation while meeting application requirements.
- Support sales teams with technical expertise during customer engagements, providing demonstrations of cell culture applications, antibody-based assays, molecular techniques, and analytical methods.
- Work with QC and regulatory teams to ensure all methods—from cell-based assays to analytical procedures—meet industry standards including USP, EPA, FDA, and ISO guidelines.
Technology Evaluation & Market Intelligence
- Assess emerging technologies in cell therapy, stem cell research, antibody engineering, molecular diagnostics, and analytical instrumentation to identify opportunities for expanding Filtrous's portfolio.
- Evaluate competitive products and methods across cell culture, immunoassay, molecular biology, and analytical platforms to position Filtrous solutions effectively.
- Develop application-specific data comparing product performance in cell viability, antibody specificity, molecular sensitivity, and analytical accuracy to differentiate Filtrous products in the life sciences market.
What problems you will solve:
Application Development & Method Optimization - Problems Solved:
- Lack of validated methods - Customers struggle without proven protocols, leading to failed experiments and wasted resources
- Platform incompatibility - Products that work in one system fail in another, causing customer frustration and returns
- Inconsistent results - Without optimized protocols, customers get variable data that can't support publications or regulatory submissions
- Time-consuming trial and error - Customers waste months developing methods that Filtrous could provide ready-to-use
- Regulatory rejection risk - Methods that don't meet specifications cause costly delays in clinical or diagnostic implementations
Customer Validation & Field Support - Problems Solved:
- Failed product adoption - Without on-site support, customers abandon products after initial failures rather than optimizing conditions
- Knowledge gaps - Many labs lack expertise in specialized techniques, preventing them from using advanced products effectively
- Site-specific variables - What works at Filtrous may fail at customer sites due to water quality, equipment differences, or user technique
- Extended downtime - Without rapid support, failed experiments can halt research projects or diagnostic testing for days/weeks
- Training bottlenecks - New staff can't get up to speed quickly, reducing lab productivity and increasing error rates
Content Creation & Marketing Support - Problems Solved:
- Underutilized products - Customers use products at 30% capability because they don't know advanced applications exist
- Lost sales opportunities - Sales team can't articulate technical value without compelling proof-of-performance data
- High support burden - Without clear documentation, every customer requires extensive hand-holding, overwhelming support staff
- Competitive disadvantage - Competitors with better technical content appear more credible and win customers despite inferior products
- Customer confusion - Complex scientific concepts presented poorly lead to misuse, complaints, and damaged reputation
Cross-functional Partnership - Problems Solved:
- Product-market misalignment - R&D develops products that don't fit customer workflows without field application input
- Sales credibility gaps - Sales team loses deals when they can't answer technical questions or demonstrate applications
- Post-launch failures - Products released without thorough application testing fail in customer hands, causing recalls/returns
- Compliance issues - Methods developed in isolation may not meet regulatory requirements, blocking customer implementations
- Siloed knowledge - Critical application insights stay trapped with individuals instead of improving products company-wide
Technology Evaluation & Market Intelligence - Problems Solved:
- Obsolete product portfolio - Missing emerging market trends leads to declining relevance and lost market share
- Blind competitive positioning - Without knowing competitor capabilities, can't effectively differentiate or price products
- Missed opportunities - Unaware of new application areas where existing products could excel with minor modifications
- Reactive product development - Always catching up to market needs instead of anticipating and leading
- Unsubstantiated claims - Without comparative data, marketing messages lack credibility and fail to convince customers
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related life sciences field with extensive experience in analytical instrumentation (required)
- Demonstrated expertise in method development and validation on analytical platforms including LCMS, HPLC, GCMS, ICP-MS, and qPCR systems
- Proven track record of translating analytical methods into customer applications through technical publications, application notes, or validated protocols
