POSITION: Pre-Op Nurse

DEPARTMENT: ASC

REPORTS TO: ASC Director

JOB SUMMARY: The pre-op position will consist of a BLS and an ACLS certified licensed nurse. This nurse will prepare patients for surgery, administering eye drops and other pre-op medications in the pre-operative area. Acts as the patient advocate, ensuring that quality care is administered.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:  Workers supervised – ophthalmic technicians.  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduate from an accredited nursing school licensed in the state of New Mexico with BLS and ACLS certifications.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Demonstrates a commitment to quality in patient care and maintaining standards of courtesy and friendliness to co-workers.
2. Demonstrates ability to obtain EKGs per facility policy and as ordered by CRNA or MD.
3. Able to maintain and comply with patient confidentiality and integrity policy.
4. Demonstrates ability to follow physician’s orders, takes vital signs and identify parameters outside normal limits.
5. Plans, organizes, and directs preoperative care of patients to maintain surgical flow and safe transition of patients to operating room.
6. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
7. Stable, mature, and dependable.
8. Current BLS and ACLS certification.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Notes preoperative physician’s orders and transcribes appropriate data with accuracy to medication administration record.
• Ensures completeness of preoperative paperwork to include comprehensive and pre-surgical H&Ps.
• Ensures the surgeon marks the appropriate eye.
• Completes the preoperative section of the Safe Surgery Checklist.
• Administers eye drops or ointment ordered by the physician.
• Prepares local and/or regional injections for administration by the surgeon.
• Obtains EKG when indicated.
• Reviews baseline vital signs.
• Notifies CRNA and/or physician immediately if vital signs are outside normal limits.
• Ensures all consent forms are signed and witnessed prior to surgery.
