What are the responsibilities and job description for the PRN Ultrasound Technician position at FILLMORE COUNTY HOSPITAL?
POSITION PURPOSE: The Ultrasound Technician will perform diagnostic sonographic examinations using ultrasound equipment to assist physicians in diagnosing and monitoring a variety of conditions. The ideal candidate demonstrates technical expertise, patient-focused care, and a commitment to accurate and timely imaging.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate degree in Ultrasound or equivalent
- Ability and willingness to cross-train into other ultrasound modules
- Exceptional knowledge of scanning principles of sonography that optimize technique for best image results
- Ability to work independently and efficiently under normal and emergency circumstances
- Current Diagnostic Medical Sonographer license in the State of Nebraska
- American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or registry eligible
- Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs a variety of ultrasonography procedures utilizing ultrasound equipment according to the manufacturer recommendations and follows established protocols as defined by the radiologist.
- Perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures according to established protocols and physician orders.
- Prepare and position patients for ultrasound examinations; explain procedures and ensure patient comfort.
- Operate ultrasound equipment and capture quality diagnostic images.
- Analyze and record test results; submit preliminary findings to the interpreting physician.
- Maintain detailed patient records and ensure accurate data entry into electronic medical records (EMR).
- Monitor and maintain ultrasound equipment, reporting any malfunctions or need for service.
- Adhere to infection control and safety procedures at all times.
- Collaborate with healthcare team members to deliver coordinated and effective patient care.
- Maintain continuing education and certifications as required by governing bodies.
2. Processes images, reviews each examination for technical accuracy, correct labeling of images and anatomic orientation, and proper date and patient identification on films.
- Provides diagnostic images and history to radiologist and reviews findings with radiologist and/or ordering physician.
- Communicates pertinent data to persons responsible for the care of the patient following the procedure.
- Assists in scheduling patients and procedures to coordinate in-patient, critical or emergency and outpatient schedule efficiently.
- Maintains records, computer/order/resulting/charging entries and filing to maintain patient records and patient confidentiality.
3. Performs and safely operates the ultrasound equipment by following established safety procedures in order to protect the patient and staff from any unnecessary harm.
- Inspects all transducers and cords for cracks/tears thereby preventing exposure to electrical shock.
- Cleans transducers after each use with appropriate disinfectant solution.
- Cleans all filters and associated equipment.
4. Demonstrates exceptional patient communication skills.
- Assesses patient pain interfering with imaging procedure.
- Explains the test to the patient in a manner that lowers any anxiety.
- Introduces self to patient in a cheerful and pleasant manner.
- Communicates with patient throughout exam to reduce any patient anxiety.
5. Maintains supplies and cleanliness in the department.
- Maintains equipment and recommends service as needed. Carries out necessary quality control and quality assurance to insure high performance standards are met.
- Provides ultrasound instruction for students, medical staff, and nursing for the general education of these customers.
- Assists in Radiology as needed when the ultrasound schedule permits
6. Performs and maintains documentation.

- Communicates and collaborates effectively with other health team members regarding patient condition, nursing plan
8. Promotes and ensures patient safety in performance of all responsibilities.
- Administers treatments and procedures in a timely and safe manner according to physician orders and nursing policy.
- Demonstrates proficient technical/clinical skills and operational knowledge of equipment on unit.
- Informs and involves Radiology Manager regarding patient care issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Utilizes proper body mechanics, transfer/lifting techniques and appropriate equipment to minimize fall risk to patient and injury to self.
9. Schedules appointments and tests; enters orders into the electronic health record according to orders from and at the direction of the provider.
- Ensures all related reports, labs and information is available in patient’s medical record prior to appointment.
- Pre-certifies patients for insurance coverage.
- Sets up referral contacts.
10. Follows HIPAA regulations and ensures that the confidentiality of patients’ medical, personal, financial records, employee records, and organizational records is maintained.
11. Participates in FCH committees, quality assurance, performance and quality improvement initiatives, and activities which support the facility and department operations.
12. Complies with the state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of FCH operations and requirements of the FCH Compliance Program. Including but not limited to:
- The Compliance Policy.
- Completes all mandatory on-line training annually and as assigned.
- All department and organization-wide policies.
- Considers the impact of regulations such as Critical Access Hospital requirements, along with Federal and State of Nebraska regulations and discusses concerns appropriately to ensure compliance.
