As our company continues to grow in project volume and geographic footprint, we are seeking a Controller to lead our financial operations and strengthen our accounting infrastructure.
Position Overview
The Controller will serve as the financial backbone of the organization, working directly with executive leadership to oversee financial reporting, job costing, project accounting, and cash flow management.
This role bridges finance, business development, and field operations, ensuring project performance is tracked accurately and financial strategy supports continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
Construction Accounting & Job Costing
• Prepare and analyze monthly Work-In-Progress (WIP) schedules
• Manage percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
• Partner with project managers and estimators to monitor budget vs actual project costs
• Manage municipal billing, owner draws, and retainage tracking
• Review subcontractor requisitions, lien waivers, and insurance compliance
• Track project change orders and protect project margins
Financial Reporting
• Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
• Maintain financial reporting in compliance with GAAP
• Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
• Prepare executive reporting including P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow analysis
Cash Flow & Capital Management
• Build forward-looking cash flow forecasts tied to project lifecycles
• Manage company banking relationships and operating accounts
• Oversee financial aspects of insurance and bonding programs
Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
• Serve as liaison for external CPA firms and annual audits
• Manage lender reporting and financial covenant compliance
• Implement scalable internal financial controls and SOPs
• Ensure compliance with tax reporting, sales tax, and prevailing wage requirements
Systems & Leadership
• Optimize accounting and project management systems integration
• Supervise and develop accounting staff
• Maintain HR financial records including benefits and payroll reporting
Qualifications
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 7–10 years accounting leadership experience in construction
• Deep experience with job cost accounting, WIP schedules, and percentage-of-completion accounting
• Experience with municipal construction billing
• Strong QuickBooks and Excel modeling skills
Preferred
• CPA, CMA, or CCIFP designation
• Experience in high-growth or acquisition-focused companies
• Background supporting M&A diligence and integration
