Summary

Typically an economist is involved in activities that support the Board's efforts in monetary policy and financial regulation: the analysis and forecasting of developments in the domestic and international economies and financial markets, analysis of options for regulatory decisions, development and maintenance of relevant economic data, or long-range research aimed at improving the theoretical and quantitative analysis used at the Board and by the economics profession generally.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Current analysis and forecasting: Provides information, analysis, and technical advice to the division's senior staff, Board Members, or the FOMC via memoranda, reports, and briefing material.
  • Monitors and reports to the Board and the FOMC on developments in particular sectors of the U.S. and foreign economies and domestic and international financial markets.
  • Prepares material for, writes, or edits portions of the "Tealbook"—reports prepared for the Federal Open Market Committee before each of its meetings.
  • Forecasts key economic and financial variables for the United States and other countries.
  • Develops and maintains econometric models of economic behavior for use in forecasting or policy analysis.
  • Statistical development and automation: Engages in careful study of analytical and econometric methods, data sources, and economic forecasting techniques and recommends or implements modification of existing procedures.
  • Develops techniques for automating work through original programming or adaptation of available computer software.
  • Coordinates section requirements for computer hardware, data systems, and software.
  • Participates in establishing methods and systems (including seasonal adjustment, sampling, survey design, and other statistical procedures) for data collection or analysis of economic variables relevant to the formulation and conduct of monetary and regulatory policy.
  • Maintains and develops databases and related information structures that are used in statistical releases, forecasting, and/or policy formulation.
  • Oversees design and production of statistical releases.
  • Designs and implements direct surveys of economic and financial activities.
  • Regulatory related activities: Analyzes structural changes in domestic and international financial markets.
  • Develops or evaluates proposals for policy changes in the areas of the Board's regulatory responsibilities; monitors and evaluates regulations that have been adopted.
  • Analyzes applications for banking mergers and acquisitions.
  • Research: Works closely with the division's senior staff in initiating, developing, and carrying out original research work or projects designed to fulfill the policy analysis and current reporting responsibilities of the division.
  • Prepares research papers that may be presented to the Board and its staff, given at outside seminars and conferences, or published in professional journals.
  • Other activities: Drafts testimony and speeches, prepares related background materials, and answers official correspondence for Board Members.
  • Answers inquiries from the Congress, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Reviews and comments on articles prepared by Reserve Bank staff for publication by the System.
  • Participates or assists in operational reviews of the statistics and discount window functions at Reserve Banks.
  • Represents the division and the Board at conferences, at meetings, and in communication with foreign and other U.S. governmental agencies and with international organizations.
  • Participates in the recruitment and evaluation of prospective new economists and research assistants.
  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with economists and other professionals both within and outside the Federal Reserve System.
  • Under the direction of the section chief or senior economist, may oversee assignments given to statistical or research assistants.

Position Requirements

The Federal Reserve Board is seeking new Ph.D. and seasoned economist candidates who demonstrate the potential to contribute creatively to policy analysis and academic research in a collaborative workplace. We invite applications both from candidates with a Ph.D. in economics, finance, or a related discipline, and from those nearing completion of their doctoral dissertation.

The Board employs Ph.D. economists to conduct policy work in support of the Board’s missions. In analyzing the economic and financial data and conditions, the Board relies on economists, who together, have backgrounds in a broad range of fields in economics. Researchers at the Board benefit from a variety of supports including extensive and unique data resources, high-quality computing facilities, well-trained and motivated research assistants and analysts, very visible research working paper series, active academic seminar series, and internal workshops for presenting work in progress. (Information on our resources) The Board also hosts a Federal Statistical Research Data Center, which allows researchers with approved projects to access restricted-use microdata from the Census Bureau and other agencies to address important research questions. Selection Process

We will conduct an initial screening based on your application materials. Candidates who are successful in meeting our initial criteria may receive an invitation to participate in a virtual first-round interview. Following that interview, some candidates will receive an invitation for a flyout to one of our Washington, D.C. locations. Flyout interviews include meeting with multiple Board staff and the candidate conducting a 75-minute seminar. The Board extends offers on a rolling basis following flyouts, and start dates are negotiated between the candidate and the hiring division/section.
