What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Technician/Assistant position at Fayette Veterinary Hospital?
The purpose of this position is to assist with treatments, computerize all transactions, maintain
inventory, monitor hospitalized pets, run routine in-house lab work, ensuring medications are
ready, assisting in the exam room with restraint during exam and treatment, and client
communication and education. The assistant will also provide constant cleanliness of cages,
runs, and ward areas and proper feeding care of all hospitalized animals.
Purpose:
- To be efficient, very pleasant , courteous, polite, concerned and helpful to all clients under all
conditions at all times.
- To see the clients leaves the office with another visit scheduled for their continued pet health
care. Contribute your part to the three “R’s”: Recall, reminder, reschedule recheck appointment.
- To keep office/lab/exam room/treatment area/etc. organized, ensuring a smooth and efficient
client flow.
- To recommend all necessary lab work, such as pre-anesthetic profiles, heartworm tests, feline
leukemia tests, geriatric physicals, that are necessary for optimum patient care.
- To recommend vaccinations that are necessary for optimum patient care.
- To recommend products such as flea control, vitamins, diets and dentals that are necessary
for optimum patient care.
- To counsel clients regarding behavioral problems, obesity, geriatric care, nutritional problems,
flea control, etc.
Duties in Exam Room:
- Follow Fayette Veterinary Hospital general policies.
- Greet client by smiling, introducing themselves and greeting the client/pet by name.
- Obtain pet weight, temperature, and brief history.
- Assist in getting animal on exam room table and perform restraint during exam/treatment.
- Prepare any needed prescriptions, do routine suture removals, ear cleaning, and nail trims.
- Basic client education, including puppy/kitten care, heartworms, and nutrition.
- Have supplies prepared for exams and appointments.
- Run fecals, heartworm tests, urinalysis, and FeLV tests as needed.
- Anticipate vaccines or other medications/injections doctor will need to treat animal and have
ready.
- Prepare medications that need to be sent home. Count pills and prepare labels.
- Get any literature ready that is pertinent to the pet’s problem and owner’s questions.
- Show client how to give medications to the pet.
- Answer any additional questions and resolve any problems.
- Escort client to the reception area for payment processing.
- Ensure that all reminder and recalls have been generated. Make sure receptionists knows
when the doctor wants the animal to be seen again for follow-up recheck and that an
appointment is set.
- Check exam room drawers and remove used syringes and other materials. Clean table.
Sweep and spot clean floor, if necessary.
- Keep lab and pharmacy area neat and free of dirty items.
Duties in the Kennel:
- Assist in morning rotations of animals in the kennel. Ensure all animals get needed medication.
- Maintain any treatments requested by doctor. Mark all services rendered on the tracking form.
- Monitor pets in clinic to be sure they are comfortable and clean.
- Oversee kennel duties.
Clean and sanitize all cages, runs, wards, and related areas.
Give baths and whatever grooming as may be necessary to the treatment of each
animal
Recover animals from anesthesia and recognize and record any unusual condition or
behavior.
Walk/perform physical therapy with patients as needed.
Feed and water patients as prescribed by the veterinarian and record appetite
Keep kitchen area clean and neat
Receive animals admitted for hospital care and release animals to their owners
cleaned and properly groomed.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Boarding pets-
Admit and release boarders.
Take files and anything left with pet, forward on the day going home.
Duties with Labwork/ Diagnostics/ Inventory:
- Order prescription pet foods on designated days.
- Monitor lab supplies and have all forms and tumes labeled for any scheduled blood work. After
blood has been drawn, spin down and wrap up in form. Order lab supplies, as needed.
- Assist in taking developing and maintaining radiographs as needed.

Duties in Surgery:
- Enter fees into computer for surgery/hospitalized patients. Call pets’ owners to advise on pet’s
status.
- Assist with dental procedures.
- Be familiar with surgical instruments and how to wrap a surgical pack.
- Assist in monitoring anesthesia.
- Assist in surgical preparation.
- Recover animals from anesthesia and extubate.
Miscellaneous Duties:
- Help keep hospital clean and orderly.
- Maintain animal records by recording all conversations with clients and any work done. Work
closely with doctors and follow up on additional work needed.
- Start computer in the morning.
- Prepare any prescriptions that need to be dispensed.
- Do laundry.
- Perform janitorial duties including sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, etc.
- Perform any other duties requested by the doctor or practice manager.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
