The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for independently inspecting, maintaining, and repairing diesel engines and heavy equipment. This role requires strong diagnostic skills, the use of Cummins Insite, Davie 4, Bendix abs, Clean truck check software, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Support from the Fleet Maintenance Manager and other mechanics will be available when needed. The Mechanic will communicate regularly with the Fleet Maintenance Manager regarding job status, objectives, and ongoing repair needs. Competitive Pay: $80,000 to $95,000 base wage annually (upwards of $120,000 annually with potential overtime and discretionary bonus).

Essential Functions
- Independently perform inspections, servicing, and repair of heavy-duty diesel equipment, including engines, drive trains, fuel systems, electrical systems, cooling systems, hydraulic and air brake systems, chassis, wheels, suspension, and concrete mixer components.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and correct mechanical issues; replace defective parts and systems efficiently and accurately.
- Conduct road tests to verify that vehicles are safe and fully operational.
- Perform CHP-required inspections and maintain accurate records for commercial vehicles.
- Follow all federal and state regulations regarding emissions, smog requirements, hazardous materials handling, and tire disposal/recycling.
- Complete preventative maintenance, install upgrades, winterize vehicles, and perform corrosion-control work to maintain reliability and maximize uptime.
- Maintain and troubleshoot shop tools and equipment; perform preventative maintenance and coordinate repairs when needed.
- Request assistance from coworkers or the Fleet Maintenance Manager when jobs require additional support or collaboration.
- Stay current with industry standards through training, publications, professional discussions, and participation in industry-related forums.
- Safely and effectively operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic software, and shop machinery.
- Read, interpret, and utilize shop manuals, diagnostic software, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, equipment room, and inventory area.
- Ensure accuracy and timeliness on all assigned jobs, communicating progress and needs to the Fleet Maintenance Manager.
- Promote and maintain a “Safety First” environment at all times.
- Perform adjustments and repairs necessary to correct vehicle deficiencies.
- Test engine safety systems and combustion controls to comply with federal and state requirements.
- Ability to travel to other location for multiple days when support is needed

Noise levels range from moderate to loud.

Exposure to crystalline silica and cement dust may occur. Long-term, unprotected exposure can cause cancer. Cement can cause severe skin burns, eye injuries, respiratory irritation, and may also increase cancer risk.
Qualifications
Position Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Vocational training in Diesel Mechanics or equivalent experience.
- 1–3 years of hands-on mechanical experience preferred.
- Employees are expected to provide and maintain a personal set of tools required to perform the essential functions of the position
- Proven knowledge of diesel engines and related components.
- Strong communication skills, good judgment, and high attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently with support available when needed.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with coworkers and management.
- Ability to read and understand technical instructions in English.
- CDL preferred but not required.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and maneuver in/out/around large trucks safely.
