What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shop Manager — Custom Furniture position at Fargo Woodworks?
Fargo Woodworks builds high-end custom furniture, and we're growing. We're looking for a Shop Manager to run our production floor and own how the work gets done, from the moment an order hits the shop to the day it ships.
This is a leadership role first and a woodworking role second. You'll manage the team, set the tone, build the culture, and be accountable for quality and deadlines. You'll also help us build out the systems and process that take a fast-growing shop and make it run like clockwork.
To be clear about the bar: this is not a step-up role for a lead hand or a first-time manager. We need someone who has already run a team, knows how to win people over and hold them accountable, and can walk in and set the standard from day one. If you've done that and you're ready to do it somewhere you can build it your way, this is that opportunity.
What you'll own
- Day-to-day production: scheduling the team, sequencing jobs, and keeping work flowing
- On-time delivery: hitting ship dates every week and flagging risks early
- Team leadership: holding a crew of skilled builders accountable and helping them grow
- Quality control: making sure every piece meets our standard before it leaves the shop
- Process and systems: tightening how the shop runs as we scale
What we're looking for
- 5 years directly managing and leading a team
- .You've owned a crew, not just been the senior guy on it.
- A leader who sets the tone and builds culture. People want to do good work for you, and you know how to earn that, not demand it.
- A track record of hitting deadlines and running an organized, disciplined operation
- The backbone to hold people accountable directly and professionally, and the judgment to know when to push and when to coach
- Experience in cabinet, millwork, furniture, or similar manufacturing/production environments
- A real respect for craftsmanship and an eye for quality (our benchmark is Restoration Hardware and Arhaus)
- Someone energized by a growing company and ready to build the systems, not just work within them
Why this role
We're early enough that you'll have a genuine hand in shaping how this shop operates, and established enough that the work and the orders are already here. You'll report directly to the owner, have the authority to run the floor, and grow with the company.
Compensation & details
- $75,000–$90,000 base, based on experience
- Performance bonus tied to on-time delivery and production targets
- Health / PTO
- Full-time, on-site in Fargo, ND
How to apply
Apply through really with your resume. In a short note, tell us about a time you took a disorganized shop or team and turned it into a well-run operation. That's the heart of this job, and it's what we'll want to talk about first.
